The Googles Cuts 100
This is said news. Since they’re not expanding, why does Google need recruiters? Well, 100 were let go… Here’s the official Google Blog on the matter:
As we made clear during our last quarterly earnings call in October, Google is still hiring but at a reduced rate. Given the state of the economy, we recognized that we needed fewer people focused on hiring. – from Google
NY Times has an interesting response:
But the job cuts also suggest, as noted in Valleywag, which first reported the news, a “loss of innocence” at Google. The company, with its free gourmet food and other lavish perks, has been portrayed as a bit of a worker Utopia. The food may still be free and tasty, but 100 fewer people will get to taste it.
And Techcrunch tells that many projects have also been cute:
At Google, when it rains, it pours. In the wake of announcing its first round of layoffs this afternoon, Google has released several blog posts detailing the upcoming shutdown of a number of services. Included among the upcoming closures are: Google Notebooks, Google Catalogs, Dodgeball, Google Video, Google Mashup Editor, and future development of Jaiku.
