Stop Playing Homework and Do Your Video Games

A live performance for Seattle’s Marrowstone in the City program. The music was arranged by the genius Lennart Jansson (Link) and myself (Ash Ketchum). I choreographed all the extra bits behind us as we play as well as sang the Halo theme, of course. The Tetris bit is a tribute to the old a capella group that did game themes. Hope you enjoy.

Go ahead and subscribe if you enjoy. I’ll be sure to upload my future film school projects here, starting with my Pokemon/24 mashup radio drama. You read that right.

Order of performance:
The Legend of Zelda
Pokemon
Halo
Tetris
Kirby
Pong
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario World

1st Violin – Koyo Kim (Mario)
2nd Violin – Gen Kim (Ash Ketchum)
Viola – Justine Preston (Luigi)
1st Cello – Lennart Jansson (Link)
2nd Cello – Sarah Stone (Princess Peach)

Interview: Jason Rohrer, Developer of Passage of Primrose

Zmogo.com has an interview up with Jason Rohrer, developer of the indie hit Passage. Jason was featured in Esquire Magazine’s geniuses issue for his video game art.

His newest game, Primrose, a compelling puzzle game, was recently released on PC, Mac, Linux, and iPhone.

From the article:

How would you describe Primrose, for anyone that hasn’t heard of it?

Primrose is a tile-clearing puzzle game.  It’s in the same family as Tetris, but it has completely new mechanics that have never been seen before.

How long did Primrose take to complete?

About two months.

Primrose is a bit of a departure from your other games, in that it isn’t obviously “about” anything. What made you decide to make a straightforward puzzle game like this?

I saw it as a challenge.  I wanted to push myself outside the area that I was comfortable working in.

People often talk about Tetris as being a perfect game or one of the best video games of all time.  They also describe it as a mysterious stroke of genius, never to be equaled or surpassed.  I wanted to try my hand at making a game like this—not a copy of Tetris, but a game with captivating, deep mechanics that could have a very long play life.

I also wanted to make something that was more appropriate for extended play on an iPhone.  My art games can each be played a handful of times at most, and though they might inspire interesting thought, the majority of people do not feel that they’re worth paying for.  The market really values games based on total playtime.

Nintendo Wii, DS sell more than 5 million units

jlfwbqdr

Nintendo was on Santa’s ‘good list’ this Christmas, as the Wii and DS took the lead and bitchslapped Sony and Microsoft. Everyone received a Wii this year — even my frakin’ dad wanted to buy one. So you hear about these tough economic times, but I doubt anyone was playing Wii Bowling during the depression era. Unless you count waiting in the bread line as a sport… Here’s the buzz on Nintendo:

Despite the slumping national economy, sales of video games still managed to beat Wall Street’s expectations for the month of December, thanks mostly to strong demand for Nintendo devices. Sales of game software in the U.S. jumped 15% to $2.75 billion for the month, according to data from NPD Group issued late Thursday. Analysts on average had been expecting sales growth of approximately 9-10%. Sales of game hardware edged up 2% to $1.88 billion for the month. – from Marketwatch

Nintendo Co. continued to dominate the U.S. video-game market in December, increasing sales of the Wii console by 59 percent and setting an industry record with more than 3 million purchases of its handheld players. Nintendo, the world’s largest maker of game consoles, sold 2.15 million Wii players last month, researcher NPD Group Inc. said today in a statement. Total U.S. video-game industry sales rose 9.3 percent to $5.29 billion in December, the Port Washington, New York-based group said today. – from Bloomberg

NPD reported that 55 percent of new-generation video game consoles sold in the United States last year were Wii devices, known for motion-sensing controllers and family-style play. The four top-selling video games last year are Wii titles, and Nintendo’s retail success is credited with helping video game industry revenues in 2008 rise 19 percent from the previous year. – from AFP

Toddler Brains Being Warped By Too Much Video Games, TV

People, turn off the TV. And the Wii isn’t a teet. Spent some time with your kid, read them a frakin’ book. While you’re at it, clean up your house and take out the trash. Oh, too busy playing WOW? Report from England:

Toddlers could be screened for speech problems after evidence that many are so addicted to television and video games that they are failing to learn basic communication skills. An ambitious nationwide screening programme for two-year-olds is reportedly being considered to tackle the problem which experts say is now more prevalent than dyslexia or autism. The decline of the traditional family meal time, the long-hours culture in the parents’ workplaces, poor childcare with little stimulation and social deprivation are also being blamed. – from Telegraph

Celebrities on Their Favorite Video Games

Female Gamers 5 Times More Likely to be Bisexual

If you’re a male gamer who has been looking for love in all the wrong places, it might be because you’re spending too much time playing MMOs. Or, depending on your fantasy woman, maybe that’s exactly what you should be doing. You see, not only is nearly half of the Everquest II gaming population female, but they’re apparently much more likely to be bisexual than non-EQ II players, online surveys suggest. According to no less than 2,400 completed web-based surveys, females account for 40 percent of the EQ II gaming community. The surveys also found that female EQ II players display “an unusually high level of bisexuality,” more than five times that of the “general population.” “These are not people who are following strict gender stereotypes,” said lead researcher Scott Caplan. “I think what you would find in this population are going to be people who are in other ways less traditional than the majority population.” – from MaximumPc

Following a recent EverQuest II survey that suggested MMO players were sad but not overweight, another study has found that females and bisexuality may be more prevalent in the game than one may expect. After tallying the results of over 2,400 completed web-based surveys, researchers told BBC News that females make up roughly 40% of the EverQuest II “gaming population.” Furthermore, those women were found to display “an unusually high level of bisexuality,” beating out the rate of “general population” bisexuality by more than five times. – from Shacknews

Perhaps in support of this the survey revealed an unusually high level of bisexuality among the women who took part in the study – over five times higher than the general population. “These are not people who are following strict gender stereotypes,” said Prof Caplan. “I think that the game itself is right now a very non-traditional activity for women, and so I think what you would find in this population are going to be people who are in other ways less traditional than the majority population.” – from BBC
