Shaq Retires

Oh no, the rumors are back. Shaq Retires is the recent buzz hitting the internet. There are unconfirmed rumours that Shaq (Shaquille Rashaun O’Neal) , may be retiring from basketball, the game in which he is one of the most dominant players in history.

Shaq Retires

O’Neils contract is due to expire following the 2009-2010 season, and it is believed the 7 feet 1 inch, 325 pound basketball giant, may just announcement at the same time. If he does he will sorely missed amongst the players, but especially by the fans. O’Neal has had previously that he plans to retire after this season but the news of his oncoming retirement happening at this point in the year comes as a big surprise to everyone. The big man has been averaging 10.9 points and 6.8 rebounds per game this season for the Cavaliers and there really is no logical reason why he’d announce his retirement at this point of the season. The Cavaliers lead the NBA’s Eastern Conference Central standings with a 15-7 record and are main contenders for the title once the playoffs kick off.

Shaq retires rumor was started for fun. It is now trending in Twitter. College Humor is encouraging people to tweet shaq retires to see if they get an acknowledgement from shaq. But no response has been made from Shaq’s side in his twitter account so far. You can check out his twitter account for more convincing facts.

TechCrunch publishes sensitive hacked Twitter info

Technology news website TechCrunch published on Wednesday sensitive internal documents belonging to Twitter, including financial projections, offering a rare glimpse into the wildly popular microblogging site. Twitter has a targeted revenue run rate of $140 million by the end of 2010, with the expectation it would record its first revenue — a modest $400,000 — in the third quarter of this year, according to a document Techcrunch published that it said was sent by a hacker.

There is clearly an ethical line here that we don’t want to cross, and the vast majority of these documents aren’t going to be published, at least by us. But a few of the documents have so much news value that we think it’s appropriate to publish them. – from Techcrunch

Patrick Swayze Releases Photo to Correct Death Rumors

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. But for Patrick Swayze just two will do – I’m alive. And it’s clear what cancer-stricken Swayze, 56, is trying to convey as he sits smiling alongside wife Lisa Niemi and their dogs, poodle Lucas and Rhodesian ridgeback puppy Kumasai, at their ranch in New Mexico. The picture, taken last week, was released after a wave of false rumours that Swayze had died. The story originated on U.S. radio station Kiss FM and then circulated on social micro-blogging site Twitter. – from DailyMail

Twitter wrongly declares Patrick Swayze dead

Patrick Swayze’s publicist has been forced to confirm the actor is still alive after false reports of his death raced around the internet, fueled by Twitter. Swayze, 56, was diagnosed with a malignant pancreatic tumor in January 2008, and his battle with the disease has been well chronicled in the media. His death was incorrectly reported on a US radio station yesterday but the false rumor soon gained momentum on Twitter, where users “re-tweeted” or forwarded the message on. Swayze’s publicist was forced to issue a statement: “This is to confirm that Patrick Swayze did not pass away this morning contrary to severely reckless reports stemming from a radio station in Jacksonville, Florida. “Patrick Swayze is alive, well and is enjoying his life and he continues to respond to treatment.”

Kevin Rose Blah Blah Digg Blah Twitter zzzz

Like everyone else, Digg has a serious case of Twitter envy. And they’re doing something about it. In an interview last month Digg founder Kevin Rose told me that the company was working on an overhaul of the Digg service, calling it a “completely new direction” and referring to the new Digg search as an indication of what direction they’re going in. He didn’t (and still won’t) give many details, except to say that Digg needs to to “a living and breathing site” and “a little bit more real-time in nature” (”real-time” is secret code for Twitter, and has been used so much lately that people are mocking it). – from Techcruch

The World’s Oldest Tweeter

People can follow the silver surfer’s updates at ‘IvyBean104 ’ on Twitter.com Her first posts have included “Looking forward to Deal or No Deal later,” “just having a cuppa,” and “chicken casserole was lovely, going to have a nod now.”

Twitter continues to suck

Oh, and suck on our tweets at http://www.twitter.com/buzznewsroom

With Twitter’s update last night, you won’t see any more tweets from your friends that are replies to people you don’t know. So if you were following me on Twitter but not Eyder, to continue with the above example, that tweet would not even exist as far as you’re concerned. You’d never see it, and you’d never get the opportunity to meet Eyder in the process. – from NPR

Twitter says the reason why:

We’ve updated the Notices section of Settings to better reflect how folks are using Twitter regarding replies. Based on usage patterns and feedback, we’ve learned most people want to see when someone they follow replies to another person they follow—it’s a good way to stay in the loop. However, receiving one-sided fragments via replies sent to folks you don’t follow in your timeline is undesirable. Today’s update removes this undesirable and confusing option. – from Twitter

Google, buy Twitter already, okay!’

Update:

This whole situation has turned into an absolute disaster. Twitter claimed it was just removing a feature that relatively few people used, but if it really believed that, it should have stuck with it. Instead, it admitted that the move was done with help with scaling issues. – from Techcrunch

Google Updates Search Engine, Twitter Real-Time Search

Do a search at Google today and you’ll see a new link at the top of the page, “Show options…” That link opens up a whole new set of search tools that look like they’ll be spectacularly useful and even a little fun.

The tools let you find only results published in the past day or past week, find only results in forums, find only reviews, or get a sneak peek at the images on the pages in your results. In addition, there are a couple of new ways that Google presents results visually. You can choose the Wonder Wheel, a visual search result that shows your central topic in the middle with spokes going out to related topics around its circumference. Or you can choose Timeline, which shows the number of mentions of your topic through history, and not just the Web’s history. One example Google showed when they demoed Timeline included results back into the 1700s. – from PCWorld

Google Inc. Tuesday said it would add a new menu to its search-results page to help users refine results by a broader range of variables. It also announced an online service that compiles search results into a spreadsheet.

The services represent the search giant’s latest crack at coming up with new ways to make search results more useful to consumers. The new refinement feature will let users filter their results by a number of factors, including how new the information is. A search for a celebrity would show recent news about the person, as opposed to their official Web site, for instance. Until now, Google users saw a general view that ranked results based on Google’s algorithms.

The search options menu also lets users see their results in different visual formats, such as a graphic called the Wonder Wheel that shows topics related to a query as different spokes. For a search for “President Obama,” the feature shows spokes like “Michelle Obama” and “Barack Obama news.” Google announced a step in that direction Tuesday, called “Google Squared.” The service, which it will introduce in its online area for experiments called “Google Labs,” will automatically send results from a search into a spreadsheet. Google will search for the most relevant results and determine what the most relevant row and column labels are for a query — say “price” and “color” for a user searching for “mountain bike.” The service will generate a matrix with the items filled in and with links back to the Web pages from which it drew the content. – from WSJ

Searchology Google has rolled out its answer to Twitter’s much-discussed real-time search.

Beginning today, the world’s largest search engine will offer a new “search options” page that gives users the power to instantly sort results according to certain, predefined criteria. Among other things, you can leap to what Google describes as the most recent results matching your particular query.

“You really need some type of slice and dice mechanism,” Google golden child Marissa Mayer told reporters this morning at the company’s annual Searchology shindig inside its Mountain View, California, headquarters. – from Register

Google will Acquire Twitter, Not Apple

The Apple rumor is utter BS — and makes no sense at all. We feel Google or a search engine focused company (Microsoft’s Live.com) will acquire Twitter. It’s about organizing data — cataloging posts. Just like Google picked up Blogger, the same thing will happen with Twitter. But Apple? No way….

Twitter Search is easily the most promising aspect of Twitter. People talk about mundane updates, or connecting with companies, or following celebrities — but that’s all small scale. The real power of Twitter lies in its aggregate data. Why do you think Google and every other company out there is interested in them? It’s not just because they are the hot ticket in town right now, despite what some would have you believe. It’s all about the data. And Twitter knows that too — and is apparently on the verge of some interesting moves with Twitter Search that will better highlight that. – from Techcrunch

For months, gossipmongers like us have been spreading word that Google might snatch up the microblogging company for a few hundred million. After all, Twitter’s main potential value lies in searching all those tweets in real time and the advertising that could accompany the search results. What business model does that sound like to you?

And Google’s not alone in reportedly salivating over all that searchable data. Apple has reportedly offered $700 million to make Twitter a part of the Steve Jobs family. In fact, Twitter Vice President of Operations Santosh Jayaram (who just happens to be Google’s former head of search quality) just announced a new breakthrough in searching tweets. Now, Twitter’s search engine will also crawl over each tweet, find any links people embedded in them, scan the linked page, and index the content to produce even more accurate results. In addition, Twitter’s search engine will also rank results according to whatever Internet or cultural trend is hot at the moment, as well as the popularity of each twitterer. Now everyone searching on Twitter gets to know what Ashton Kutcher thinks, whether they want to or not. – from Reuters

Forget all those rumors about Apple, Google, Microsoft or anyone else buying Twitter: The company’s bosses say Twitter is not for sale. Yesterday, Twitter co-founders Biz Stone and Evan Williams were on ABC’s “The View” as part of Twitter’s current media campaign that has also included appearances on Oprah and The Colbert Report. Responding to a question from Barbara Walters about the rumors surrounding an imminent purchase of Twitter by a larger tech company, Stone responded with an unequivocal, “No. We are not for sale.” – from PCWorld

Apple to buy Twitter?

Facebook tried to buy Twitter. Google and Microsoft have been giving the red-hot Internet-messaging startup the eye. But we hear it’s Apple that’s closest to sealing a deal, possibly for as much as $700 million. A source who’s plugged into the Valley’s deal scene and has been recruited by Apple for a senior position says Apple and Twitter are in serious negotiations, with the goal of unveiling a deal by June 8, when Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference launches in San Jose. Twitter turned down a $500 million offer in cash and stock from Facebook, in part because Twitter’s investors couldn’t agree on whether Facebook’s stock was worth as much as Facebook said it was. But Apple could easily pay cash. A source familiar with the thinking of Twitter’s board says the company would be hard-pressed to refuse an all-cash offer in the range of $700 million. (Is Twitter really worth that? Since it’s business is nothing but a fantasy at this point, any valuation, high or low, is a matter of make-believe.) – From Gawker

President Obama 2.0 and Twitter

First, Twitter’s text-only, 140-character-max simplicity is ideal for putting out a statement or a call to action without the need to script a longer essay or speech. Mr. Obama’s two updates were perfect examples: One asked for questions about the economy, the other linked to a Web site that collects the president’s 100-day accomplishments. The White House staff could easily deliver one solid message per day. They could start by tweeting each week’s video address, to remind us to watch it.

Second, Twitter, used as a sort of micro-blog, is a humanizing medium that can put a face on the sprawling, distant bureaucracy of government. California’s secretary of state, Debra Bowen, tweets several times a day. She’s followed by people who previously didn’t know California even had a secretary of state.

- from NYTimes

Update: The White House began tweeting around noon Eastern time on Friday. There’s also a new whitehouse page on MySpace. The usernames match those of the previously launched “whitehouse” user accounts on YouTube and Flickr.

Since the day Barack Obama took office as President, I’ve urged him to keep up his eager use of Twitter. The fast-growing micro-blogging site had helped drive his campaign, both as a fundraising tool and as proof that the candidate had a firm grasp of the new, participatory Internet. But Mr. Obama’s Twitter feed has only been updated twice since he took office on January 20th.

Good news: He’ll be back, and soon, this time at twitter.com/whitehouse. What’s funny is that the President’s new feed has been hiding in plain sight since January: “Welcome to the official Twitter page of the White House.”

- from NYTimes

Twitter still hasn’t come clean, but it appears yet another administrative account on the micro-blogging site has been breached, giving world+dog an inside peek at the accounts of Barack Obama, Ashton Kutcher, and other celebrities. Screenshots posted on French blog Korben show more than a dozen images purporting to be taken by a hacker who gained inside access to Twitter. They provide a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the account activities of some of the most exclusive Twitterati. – from Register

Barack Obama’s Webheads are getting ready to launch a new Twitter feed for President Change. But the White House already had a Twitter account. It has disappeared down the memory hole. – from Gawker

Many Twitters are quick quitters (um, because Twitter sucks?)

Today’s Twitters are often tomorrow’s quitters, according to data that questions the long-term success of the latest social networking sensation used by celebrities from Oprah Winfrey to Britney Spears. Data from Nielsen Online, which measures Internet traffic, found that more than 60 percent of Twitter users stopped using the free social networking site a month after joining. “Twitter’s audience retention rate, or the percentage of a given month’s users who come back the following month, is currently about 40 percent,” David Martin, Nielsen Online’s vice president of primary research, said in a statement. – from Reuters

MTV & Twitter team on The Alexa Chung Show

Here’s the news we just received from MTV on their new Twitter show:

THE ALEXA CHUNG SHOW [working title]: A one-hour, daily, live entertainment show that our viewers help to create, taking viewer interaction to a new level, making them the stars of the program. Hosted by smart and witty British television personality and model Alexa Chung, the program will include celebrity guests, musical performances, and the best of the web. The Alexa Chung Show brings MTV’s always-on audience together with Twitter’s instantaneous feedback ability. In keeping with the real-time nature of the show, Twitter will enable the audience to interact with Alexa, celebrity talent, their own friends and the rest of the pop culture loving world on the spot, and in the show. Whether Alexa’s audience is at home, on the move or on the set, Twitter and MTV will capture their experiences and bring them right into the show. Additionally, the RockYou Live video sharing application will let users submit their favorite viral videos and videos they shoot themselves to the show. Fans of The Alexa Chung Show will be able to constantly communicate with the show even when it’s not on air. Alexa’s network of friends are always doing things that matter and now with Twitter and RockYou they’ll be able to constantly keep in touch. Alexa is a brand new face to the U.S. audience — and a new voice for MTV. Executive Producers: Tim Healy, Sebastian Scott. Executive Producers: Howard T. Owens and Mark Koops (Reveille).

updated with comment from Techcrunch:

Audience interaction isn’t anything new to MTV – even in the TRL days it often featured messages sent in by fans, and the videos that appeared on the show were dictated by audience voting via phone and online. But Twitter and Facebook offer the network a way to stay directly connected with fans day and night, broadcasting frequent updates even when the show isn’t on the air. And it’s likely an approach that will play extremely well to MTV’s core demographic.

Below, a video of Alexa Chung doing an interview totally unrelated to the MTV show.

Update: Former T4 presenter Alexa Chung is to front her own live daytime show on MTV in the US, which is being billed as the successor to the trail-blazing TRL. The Alexa Chung Show will be one of the highlights of MTV’s new season of programmes, announced as part of the broadcaster’s Upfront presentation to advertisers in New York yesterday. MTV said the new show would be similar to TRL, which was presented live from the channel’s Times Square headquarters in New York by Carson Daly and featured a mix of video countdowns and guests. TRL ended its 10-year run in November. – from Guardian

Gavin Newsom Announces His Candidacy for California Governor

gavin-newsomSan Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom formally declared his 2010 campaign for California governor Tuesday with a tech-savvy approach – simultaneous announcements on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube – and a message of “generational” change aimed at the influential young “millennial” voters who helped elect President Obama. Newsom, in an interview with The Chronicle, said his announcement dramatizes his intention to offer voters a far different vision, and resume, than other potential candidates. The mayor said his campaign represents “an opportunity to – I want to use the phrase ‘turn the page’ – but it is an opportunity to spin to the future. That’s something you’ll hear me promoting a lot in the next year and a half.” – from SFgate

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom officially launched his bid to become the next California governor today, marketing himself as a much-needed change to the Sacramento status quo. “We’ve gotten things done in San Francisco by putting politics aside and focusing on finding solutions to tough problems,” the 41-year-old said in a statement announcing his candidacy. “State government is failing because the politicians in Sacramento spend all their time fighting each other instead of fighting for Californians. We can’t keep returning to the same old tired solutions and expect a different result.” – from USAtoday

Twitter for the blind?

twitter

A student from Queen’s University has come up with an ingenious way to keep track of your Twitter account – through the radio. Mark McKeague, a 20-year-old student originally from Culduff in County Donegal, has managed to route his Twitter page through a radio, so that people can tune into his computerised messages. The invention could bring new followers to Twitter, and may be of special use to the blind or partially sighted. – From TechRadar.com

Ashton Kutcher wins Twitter battle with CNN

For now, Ashton Kutcher is the king of Twitter. But there is a new challenger — Oprah.
Kutcher triumphed over CNN in their much ballyhooed race to be the first to reach a million followers on the microblogging Web site. Kutcher surpassed that benchmark in the early morning hours Friday, narrowly edging out the breaking news feed from the Time Warner Inc.-owned network.
Speaking in a live webcast early Friday, Kutcher took the tone of a revolutionary.
“We have shown the world that the new wave is here,” Kutcher said on ustream.tv shortly after passing the million mark. “It is present and it is ready to explode. You guys are all of it because I can’t follow me.” – from AP
