J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof To Adapt Stephen King’s ‘The Dark Tower’ After ‘Lost’ Is Over

“Damon Lindelof and I talked to Mr. King,” Abrams told IGN while promoting the upcoming “Star Trek” film. “We got the rights for ['Dark Tower'] as a film. Damon is obviously still on ‘Lost’ and we’ve been working on ‘Star Trek’ together. As soon as ‘Lost’ is done, hopefully we’ll begin tackling that.”

Stephen King publishes a Kindle 2 Exclusive

Oooh, a Kindle story that will be only on the Kindle. Spooky. And spooky is code for stupid.

Amazon.com Inc. is announcing a new version of its Kindle e-book reader on Monday. And, in a sign that the electronic book is gaining clout in the publishing world, Amazon is also expected to say it has acquired a new work by best-selling novelist Stephen King that will be available exclusively, at least for a time, on Kindle. It is possible that the King work — in which a Kindle-like device plays a role in the story — could be published as part of a physical book at a later date by the author’s current publisher, Scribner, an imprint of CBS Corp.’s Simon & Schuster publishing arm. Scribner last November published Mr. King’s most recent book, “Just After Sunset: Stories.” – from WSJ

Stephen King smacks down ‘Twilight’ author

Edward might get mad and bite Stephen. Wait, he’s a good vampire and only eats puppies and bunnies. Never mind. Mr. King’s assertion aside, these two have one thing in common – most of their books get turned into really crappy movies. And both can laugh all the way to the bank.

Stephen King and Twilight author Stephenie Meyer have got two gigantic thing in common. Number one: their books get turned into awful, awful films. Number two, both Stephen King and Stephenie Meyer write books for 14-year-olds. True, Stephen King writes books for 14-year-old boys who smell of BO and secretly want to machinegun their school, while Stephenie Meyer writes books for 14-year-old girls who can’t spell and wet themselves every time they think of Robert Pattinson. But it’s true. So you’d think that Stephen King and Stephenie Meyer would get along, wouldn’t you? Wrong – Stephen King hates Stephenie Meyer rotten. – From TV Guide

Count Stephen King among those not swooning over Edward Cullen. In what should have been a controversy-free interview with USA Weekend to promote his latest book, the horror master has slammed Twilight creator Stephenie Meyer’s writing prowess…by flat-out saying she has none. What started with an innocent question on the recent juggernaut success of fellow mainstream writers Meyer and J.K. Rowling quickly devolved into a full-scale denouncement of the former’s skills. “The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn,” he said. “She’s not very good.” Leave it to an author not to mince his words. – From EW.com

Stephenie Meyer dreamed up Edward Cullen, a vegetarian vampire who sports a beige jacket and poloneck, while Stephen King gave us Kurt Barlow, the ancient master vampire who wreaks havoc on the town of ‘Salem’s Lot. The two bestselling authors were never going to see eye to eye over their portrayal of bloodsuckers, but this week King went so far as to rubbish Meyer’s writing abilities in an interview. King compared the Mormon author to JK Rowling, saying that both authors were “speaking directly to young people”. “The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good,” he told an interviewer from USA Weekend. – From Guardian

Stephen King isn’t in the the target audience for Twilight, but he knows his vampires — and he says the author of the teen serial “can’t write worth a darn.” Promoting his new book, Stephen King Goes to the Movies, the prolific best-selling horror novelist said in an interview with USA Weekend that Stephenie Meyer can’t hold a candle to Harry Potter’s creator. “The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn,” he said. “She’s not very good.” King did curb his attack slightly, explaining that while he’s no fan of Meyer’s prose, he does appreciate her storytelling — at least in relation to her audience. – From TV Guide

Stephen King – His 10 Best Movies of 2008

Horror “King” Stephen has released his favorite top 10 movies of 2008 at EW — but here’s his rundown via YouTube:

10. Death Race – “Death Race is filled with laconic violence and blasting muscle cars, but just beneath the surface is a biting satire of reality TV.”

9. Redbelt – “… this is not your father’s Karate Kid.”

8. The Ruins – “It could have been ludicrous. Instead, it’s unrelenting.”

7. Lakeview Terrace – “Jackson’s performance deserves an Academy Award nod, but won’t get one. Too bad.”

6. The Bank Job – “High-tension cerebral thrills.”

5. Funny Games – “It works as a savage parody of the snuff-porn genre even as it transcends it.”

4. Tropic Thunder – “The funniest, most daring comedy of the year.”

3. WALL-E – “I don’t think it deserves a Best Picture Academy Award, but it certainly deserves to be nominated.”

2. Slumdog Millionaire – “It’s been years since the movies have produced such an affecting story about the power of friendship.”

1. The Dark Knight – “The best superhero movie ever. This is to cape-and-tights movies what Godfather II was to the gangster movie: a genre-defining event.”
