Rock Band hits $1 billion sales mark in North America

rockband_megadeth

Since its launch in late 2007, the Rock Band series has pulled down more than $1 billion in sales — and that’s only including its success in North America. That figure comes courtesy of a press release issued by publisher Electronic Arts Thursday morning, that also includes word that fans of the series have paid for more than 40 million downloadable songs from the game’s vast DLC selection since the series’ debut. Though Rock Band 3 has yet to be announced, the upcoming Beatles-themed Rock Band release, PSP port of the series and weekly downloadable song additions should continue the series’ lucrative track record for quite some time. – From Wired

Dance Dance Revolution is coming to the iPhone. It’s touch screen tapping – can it be that exciting? Oh well, more money for DDR makers.

Rumors out that EA is plotting an Army of Two sequel. Just speculation, but if there’s money to made, it’ll happen.

Well done review of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II. Considering the sales and the reviews, it’s a hit.

The Beatles: Rock Band dropping 9/9/09

Today, MTV Games and Beatles record label Apple Corps. revealed that the game would, in fact, bear the branding of Harmonix’s signature Rock Band franchise. This morning, the companies announced The Beatles: Rock Band will be released on September 9, 2009–i.e. 9/9/09–in North America, Australasia, and the European Union. (Previously, the game was expected in Q4 2009.) Beatles coming to Rock Band

We knew the music of the Beatles was coming to the MTV video game Rock Band, but now we have a release date: September 9, 2009. That’s when you’ll be able to get The Beatles: Rock Band, a new edition of the game for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii consoles. You can start working on your bad “lonely hearts club band” puns now. The game itself will retail for $59.99 in the U.S.; there will also be a $99.99 version that comes with Beatles-inspired guitar controllers, and a $249.99 “special edition” bundle. I’m guessing that one comes with a walrus. The date is awfully cute, considering the Beatles’ formally self-titled “White Album” contains that song called “Revolution 9,” which consists largely of a repetition of the phrase “number nine, number nine, number nine.” Conspiracy theorists say that if you play it backward it sounds like “turn me on, dead man” and is hence one of the clues that adds up to reveal that Paul McCartney died and was replaced by a lookalike early in the band’s career. – From CNET

Gaming Buzz: Damnationa, Lost Planet 2, Nintendo DSi, Street Fighter’s big sales

damnation_previewThe boys at Kotaku have a review of Damnation. Doesn’t sound too bad. It’s due out for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on March 3, 2009.

Street Fighter IV sold more than 2 million units in the first week.

Funcom, the developer of Age of Conan, lost $23.3 million in the fourth quarter of 2008, forcing Chief Financial Officer Olav Sandnes to resign. Industry analysts blame the lose on Age of Conan, whose subscriber base may have fallen as low as 100,000.

The Wii gets some Cars tunes for Rock Band – behind Playstation and Xbox, which got them last year. Here’s the list:

“Good Times Roll”
“My Best Friend’s Girl”
“I’m in Touch With Your World”
“Don’t Cha Stop”
“You’re All I’ve Got Tonight”
“Bye Bye Love”
“Moving in Stereo”
“All Mixed Up”

Capcom revealed details on Lost Planet 2. It moves from the snow to a jungle setting for one thing, and will run on an upgraded version of MT-Framework, like Resident Evil 5, Dead Rising, Lost Planet, and Devil May Cry 4. No platform announcements, but Xbox is a for sure.

Finally, Nintendo DSi has put out a couple of trailers. Are we excited – sure – but how’s this gonna make my game cooler isn’t high on their list of things.

Gaming Buzz: Wii gets some Nirvana, Dead Rising 2, StarCraft II

deadrisingPodcast from Dead Rising creator Keiji Inafune – not tons of info on Dead Rising 2, but some tidbits. Get the details and download the podcast.

Wii Rock Band will be getting the Nirvana songs that appeared last year on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. But there are new ones too, including “Breed”, “Lounge Act”, “On a Plain”, “Polly”, “Something in the Way”, “Stay Away”, and “Territorial Pissings”.

Wondering if Microsoft is looking into developing a motion-sensing controller? Well you shouldn’t. Reports are out that Microsoft will buy 3DV for $35 million. 3DV has a product called the ZCam, which acts a lot like Sony’s EyeToy motion-sensing camera, only much, much better. 3DV claim that the ZCam tech is so advanced it’s better at sensing motion than the Wii Remote, with the added bonus that you wouldn’t need to hold any controllers.

It’s been a friggin’ decade, StarCraft II is almost ready – so says makers Blizzard Entertainment. We’ll believe it when we see it, but nice to hear something from official sources.

Blackrock Studio, makers of the off-road racer, Pure, has released the teaser trailer for its next project. It’s a racing game, but not Pure II.
