Ryan Tate, the New Valleywag Douchebag, as Owen Thomas goes to NBC

Gawker. Meh.

Owen Thomas, who has run the Silicon Valley gossip rag Valleywag for the past couple years, is leaving Gawker, the site’s parent company, we’ve learned. This move is a bad blow for the site which significantly cut its workforce a few months ago as it was rolled under the larger Gawker.com umbrella, and made into a column. – from Techcrunch

After terrorizing tech managers, Owen Thomas has decided to join ‘em. Emerging from the shadows to replace him as the Valleywag is Ryan Tate, who’s already relishing the idea of life in the sunshine. Owen took the Valleywag reins from our overlord Nick Denton himself and has fiercely worked his Silicon Valley sources for gossip and scoops. In December, Valleywag was merged into Gawker, and when we tried to talk him into staying, he said he misses the management headaches of running his own site. He’s keeping mum on his new gig, but we hear it involves the letters N, B, and C and will focus on Bay Area news. – from Valleyway Gawker whatever

Owen Thomas, who has been the editor of tech/gossip blog Valleywag for the past two years, will be Managing Editor of NBC Bay Area , one of a new series of regional online sites created by NBC Universal. The site is in beta. – from Beetofftv

NBC affiliate rejects new Leno show – network fights back

It’s another Boston Tea Party (of the TV kind)… NBC Boston affiliate WHDH announced tonight that, come September, it will air a full hour of local news at 10 PM. That means it won’t air Jay Leno’s new 10 PM show. Not only is this a huge slap in the face to Jay by his hometown station, but also to NBC. And the network is fighting back and even threatening reprisals. Tonight, I received several strongly worded statements from NBC execs declaring war on the affiliate, including this one from John Eck, President of the NBC TV Network: “WHDH’s move is a flagrant violation of the terms of their contract with NBC. If they persist, we will strip WHDH of its NBC Affiliation. We have a number of other strong options in the Boston market, including using our existing broadcast license to launch an NBC owned and operated station.” Also playing hardball is Rick Cotton, General Counsel: “It is clear that WHDH is contractually required to air NBC programming as scheduled by the network.” – From Nikki Finke

Conan O’Brien Marks Last ‘Late Night’ in Long Anticipated Step to Replace Leno

NBC Expected to Give 10 P.M. Show to Jay Leno

In a surprise move, Jay Leno is taking over the 10 p.m. slot on weeknights on the network.

The move is a huge coup for NBC Universal chief Jeff Zucker, who has long said he wanted to keep both Leno and his replacement, Conan O’Brien, in the NBC family.

The move would be a cost-effective manner in which to essentially cut down the amount of hours it must program with fare from the entertainment division. Jeff Zucker foreshadowed the move at a UBS media conference Monday, saying that NBC has to look at options including programming less primetime hours.

Well, this is certainly big news. Jay Leno is staying at NBC.

The story broke a little over an hour ago, via the trades and specifically “Broadcasting & Cable.”

The particulars: Leno, host of “The Tonight Show,” will assume a role (presumably a similar one) at a weeknight 10 p.m. show.

Repeat: A five-night a week 10 p.m. show.

An announcement is expected tomorrow.

- from Newsday

NBC is expected to announce Tuesday that it has signed its late-night star Jay Leno to a new contract that will keep him at the network in a new format that will give him the 10 p.m. time period each weeknight for a show similar to the one he has done on NBC’s “Tonight Show” show since 1993. – from NYTimes
