LeBron’s top plays of 2008-09
On one of the biggest days of his life, LeBron James took the long way home. Once inside his hometown’s city limits, James pulled his high-powered Ferrari off I-77 and drove the back roads to St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, his alma mater. Turning on Maple Street, he went past his first house on Hickory. Then, it was past the one on Silver Street, where his mother, Gloria, began raising him by herself. James visited The Boondocks, where he and his friends first dribbled on the playgrounds. James retraced the steps on Monday. His path to NBA superstardom. An unstoppable offensive force who became an elite defender this season, James claimed the league MVP, receiving the award in the gym where he first became a star. “This is a place where all my dreams started and where I thought they could become real,” James said. “There’s really not a better place.” – From ESPN

Atlanta ousts Heat, Dwayne Wade, in NBA Playoffs

Joe Johnson was tired of all the double- and triple-teaming. So he put up a shot before Miami could get an extra defender on him. From about 30 feet away. Swish. After a mostly disappointing series, Johnson finally showed up when the Hawks needed him most, making six 3-pointers and scoring 27 points to lead Atlanta into the second round of the playoffs with a 91-78 victory over Dwyane Wade and the Heat in Game 7 Sunday. – From ESPN

NBA Deadline Deals: Knicks get Hughes, Wilcox; Alston to Orlando

The Bulls sent Larry Hughes to the Knicks for Jerome James, Tim Thomas and Anthony Roberson. This is a deal of talented players who aren’t wanted in their current situation. Hughes is the best player – when healthy and happy.

The Knicks made a nice deal with Oklahoma, getting Chris Wilcox, a physical big man, in exchange for he mostly worthless Malik Rose and cash considerations.

Houston traded point guard Rafer Alston to Orlando in exchange for some junk players and a 1st round draft pick. Exact details are being hammered out.

Minnesota and Sacramento did a deal to help each other. The T-Wolves rid themselves of malcontent Rashad McCants while the Kings made more salary cap room. The Wolves sent McCants and center Calvin Booth to Sacramento for forward Shelden Williams and point guard Bobby Brown on Thursday. McCants has talent – he’s just an idiot and will likely only prove to be a problem down the road for any team that he ends up with.

In other news, the Spurs will be without Manu Ginobili for the next 2-3 weeks with an ankle injury.

Kobe, Shaq Team for All-Star Game Win

West Crushes East in NBA All-Star Game

This year’s all-star game was no contest. Kobe Bryant scored 27 points and Shaquille O’Neal added 17 for a West team that smacked down the East 146-119. The two former teammates were named co-MVPs. Amare Stoudemire added 19. The West clearly has the talent edge. It was fun seeing the players have a good time – even if it’s just a street ball game.

PS – we love the All-Star shoes.

Shaq danced, Kobe dazzled. And just like old times, they won again. Bryant led all scorers with 27 points, O’Neal partied his way back onto the All-Star stage with 17 in just 11 minutes, and the Western Conference beat the East 146-119 Sunday night. Back on the same team for the first time in nearly five years, the three-time champions shared the game MVP award. They helped the West get untracked after an awful start, then teamed up for a few buckets that helped blow it open in the third quarter. – From ESPN

It was their first time on the floor as teammates since the 2004 NBA finals. O’Neal was traded to Miami that summer, breaking apart a duo that produced three straight titles but was perhaps better known for its frequent feuding that made the breakup inevitable. ”It felt like flashbacks,” O’Neal said during an interview on TNT. ”It felt like ‘99 to ‘02.” Bryant and O’Neal shared a slight hug after being announced as MVPs, then playfully fought over the trophy commissioner David Stern handed to them. – From SI
