New in theaters this weekend: Hannah Montana, Dragonball, Observe and Report

observe_and_report_poster

Can Hannah top Fast and Furious? Hannah Montana: the Movie should open well, but it might not unseat Vin Diesel and the gang. And what about Seth Rogen’s new film, Observe and Report? The trailer isn’t funny, so will people turn out? We underestimated Fast & Furious last week, but not this time. We think it will nudge out Hannah by a few million – but not by a lot. Both should taking $25-30 million, while Monsters vs Aliens will trail behind it – probably around $20 million. Observe and Report is perplexing us, as reviews are mixed. We just don’t know if the audience will be in on this one. It will open okay – around $15 million. Dragonball Evolution will top out at $10 million – if it’s lucky.

Next week, tough guy Jason Statham returns in Crank 2, Russell Crowe and Ben Affeck find intrigue in State of Play, and Zac Efron is 17 again.

New this week:

Hannah Montana: The Movie
Tween girls will flock to it. Reviews are pretty much what you’d expect. Girls will love it. Moms will be mildly entertained. Boys and dads will role their eyes. Enter at your own risk.

Observe and Report
A strange looking movie. The trailer is not really funny, which reflects the film tone. And reviews have been all over the board. Some absolutely adore it. Others find it simply boring. A must see at some point, whether on video or in the theater just to judge for yourself. This film, like director Jody Hill’s first movie (Fist Foot Way), features an unlikeable protagonist and looks to be one of those cult films people love or just don’t get (just like Fist Foot Way).

Dragonball Evolution
This looks appropriately silly and uninspiring, and reviews and reactions are along those lines. Young boys will find it interesting, but most adults will see it as a step above Power Rangers.

Monsters vs. Aliens triumphes at box office

monsters-vs-aliens-poster

As expected, Monsters vs. Aliens did boffo business this weekend, raking in over $58 million in ticket sales. The film had decent, but not great, reviews, but the stellar trailers and 3D experience made it a must see.

Behind Monsters vs. Aliens was The Haunting in Connecticut, which did great this weekend, taking in $23 million – quite a bit more than the anticipated $15 or so. The film took advantage of solid reviews and a desire for horror beyond the slasher variety.

The only other new film, 12 Rounds, starring wrestler John Cena, stunk up the joint, barely taking in $5 million. The WWE-produced film had bad reviews and wasn’t appealing to anyone other than core audience.

Knowing and I Love You, Man, both did well, with $12-15 million takes. Julia Roberts’ Duplicity, however, looks pretty mediocre, sinking to $7.5 million. Race to Witch Mountain took in $5.6 million, and the film will be a modest success for star Dwayne Johnson, but no blockbuster. Watchmen and Taken are on their last legs. Watchmen had topped the $100 million mark, but has been a major disappointment.

Next week’s big release will be Vin Diesal’s return to the Fast and the Furious franchise.

Here’s this week’s box office.

Monsters vs. Aliens – $58.2M – $58.2M
The Haunting in Connecticut – $23M – $23M
Knowing – $14.7M – $46.2M
I Love You, Man – $12.6M – $37M
Duplicity – $7.56M – $25.6M
Race to Witch Mountain – $5.64M – $53.3M
12 Rounds – $5.3M – $5.3M
Watchmen – $2.75M – $103M
Taken – $2.7M – $137M
The Last House on the Left – $2.61M – $28.5M

New in theaters this week: Monsters vs. Aliens, Haunting in Conn., 12 Rounds

monstersvsaliens2

This week’s movies include what will probably be the first blockbuster of 2009 (aside from Paul Blart) with Dreamworks’ Monsters vs Aliens. The Haunting in Connecticut and 12 Rounds are the other films opening nationwide – not exactly stiff competition. The 3D Monsters vs. Aliens is opening in over 4,000 theaters, and should rake in $50-60 million. The Haunting in Connecticut should get $10-15 million while 12 Rounds stars wrestler John Cena, who has proven nothing as a movie star. And to compound his issues, the director is Renny Harlin. Remember Renny? Renny made Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger back in the early 90s and was seen as a hot young action director. Since then, it’s been nothing be piece of shit after piece of shit. We don’t see the trend reversing itself, but Cena’s film will still get the action fans for somewhere between $5-9 million. Holdovers Race to Witch Mountain, Knowing, Duplicity and I Love you, Man should all hang out, most, if not all of them, beating out 12 Rounds.

Monsters vs. Aliens
The trailer has been giving this film great buzz. The early reviews are solid – some great – but it just looks like a whole lot of fun that the family can all go to – and enjoy – so big bucks are in store for this one. This has a serious chance at becoming a franchise for Dreamworks.

The Haunting in Connecticut
This film has a solid cast (Virginia Madsen, Elias Koteas), and the spookiness is a nice change of pace to the slasher films of late. Early buzz is pretty good, so watch for it to do pretty well and possibly have a few weeks of legs and a good run on video.

12 Rounds
What do you expect from this film? The PG-13 rating means it’s not going to be a balls-to-the-walls action film, so it doesn’t bode well. The reviews have not helped much – pretty much what you expect – average film for those who just a bit of blood and a bit of violence. If the WWE and John Cena want to do something special, they need to go all out and do a straight kick ass action movie – blood, violence, mayhem – R-rated style.
