Twentieth Century Fox’s “Marley & Me” remained best in show at the weekend box office, fetching a winning gross of $24 million from 3,505 runs for a cume of $107 million in only 11 days. The first weekend of 2009 capped an unusually robust Christmas sesh at the box office. Four of the five films opening on Dec. 25 did boffo business over the two-week frame. Disney’s Adam Sandler family comedy “Bedtime Stories” placed No. 2 for the weekend in grossing an estimated $20.3 million from 3,684 locations for a cume of $85.6 million. – From Variety

The box office this weekend brought more of the same, which for Hollywood was a good thing, as the comedy “Marley & Me” and other Christmas films continued strongly. The top five films — and some others down the ladder — kept their positions from last week. “Marley & Me,” from 20th Century Fox, with Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, was the weekend’s top film, with about $24 million in domestic ticket sales and $106.5 million since it opened on Christmas. – From NY Times

“Marley & Me,” a canine comedy starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, led the North American box office for a second weekend on Sunday, becoming the first Christmas holiday picture to hit $100 million. Twentieth Century Fox’s adaptation of the bestselling John Grogan memoir about a lovable Labrador retriever earned $24.1 million during the three days beginning Friday, taking its 11-day haul to $106.5 million. It marks Aniston’s second consecutive $100 million-plus movie, following 2006’s “The Break-Up,” which finished with $118.7 million. – From Reuters

‘Marley’ leads holiday box office pack

Twentieth Century Fox’s canine comedy “Marley and Me” was the surprise pick of the litter at the crowded Christmas box office — grossing a hefty $51.8 million for the long weekend — but there was plenty of coin to go around in one of the most prosperous holiday seasons ever for Hollywood. Bonanza was largely fueled by older moviegoers — providing further evidence that fanboys are no longer the only demo that matters for B.O. and that older auds will be loyal filmgoers if given the right movies. It’s also a sign that Americans continue to turn to the bigscreen for comfort in bleak economic times, which they did even as holiday retail sales plunged. – From variety.com

Proof positive that dead dogs put asses in seats, the Jennifer Aniston/Owen Wilson led “Marley & Me” destroyed its competition over the four-day Christmas weekend, leaving in the dust, among others, Brad Pitt’s “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.” As we noted Friday, “Marley” had exceeded all expectations Christmas Day, becoming the highest grossing December 25th release ever ($14.8 million) and was poised to put an end to the speculation of who – Aniston or her ex-husband, Brad Pitt – would have the bigger holiday hit. – From actressarchives.com

An unusual alignment of top stars brightened Hollywood’s holiday box office as Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Adam Sandler, as well as Jennifer Aniston, Owen Wilson and a dog, pushed new movies to strong openings. “Marley & Me,” a comedy from 20th Century Fox, claimed the top spot with about $37 million for the weekend and $51.7 million since opening on Christmas Day. – From NY Times

Brad & Jen Set Box Office Records, But, Jen Wins!

There were no lumps of coal in Brad Pitt or Jennifer Aniston’s stockings this Christmas. The former couple both had movies in competition for the top spot on Christmas Day, and while Aniston’s film pulled in the most money, both movies were winners at the box office. Aniston’s Marley & Me, a feel-good movie costarring Owen Wilson about a young family and mischievous dog, was the leader of the pack, grossing $14.8 million, the highest one-day total ever for a film opening on Christmas. But Pitt’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button wasn’t far behind. The film, about the life-long romance between a man who ages in reverse (Pitt) and a woman (Cate Blanchett), set the record for the second-highest Christmas opening of all-time with $11.8 million. – from People

Twentieth Century Fox’s Jennifer Aniston-Owen Wilson starrer “Marley and Me” led the crowded pack of Christmas Day openers, grossing an estimated $14.8 million from 3,480 playdates to become the best opening ever for Dec. 25. Not only does “Marley” feature an adorable dog, it is rated PG, meaning it is appropriate for families.(Bring your hankies, however.) Paramount’s “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”–toplining Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett–also overperformed, grossing an estimated $11.8 million from 2,988 runs to score the second best Christmas Day opener of all time. Directed by David Fincher, “Button” has already picked up a number of key award noms. – from Variety

When it comes to North American moviegoing habits, this rule is primo — don’t ever bet against a pooch. So my info is that 20th Century Fox’s Marley And Me based on the bestselling book is beating the competition “by a mile”. Driven by women moviegoers, the Owen Wilson tearjerker about a man and his dog did twice what was expected — as did No. 2, Paramount’s Oscar buzzed The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button starring Brad Pitt. “It’s a classic dovetail: Marley’s strength is smack in the middle of the country and the south, while Button is strong on both coasts,” one studio insider tells me. – from Deadline Hollywood

Brad Pitt may have dumped Jennifer Aniston for Angelina Jolie and then rubbed it in her face by being photographed with Jolie and their growing family every other day for two years, but, so far at least, Aniston’s movie is whupping Brad’s movie’s butt! Big Hollywood just came out with preliminary box office numbers for Christmas Day, and “Marley & Me” has edged out “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” for the Number One slot. “Marley” clocked in with $13.9 million in ticket sales, while “Button” lagged slightly behind with $11.1 million. – from Foxnews
