Box Office Results: Madea slays Jonas Brothers; Slumdog, Taken keep pace

taken-poster-bigA few surprises for this weekend’s box office. The first was ass kicking the Jonas Brothers took at the hands of Tyler Perry’s Madea. The Jonas Brothers film was expected to do at least $20 million, but only managed $12.7 million, allowing Madea Goes to Jail to keep the box office title.

The second surprise was the continuing strong performance of Taken – which took in $10 million to rise over the $100 million mark. This film simply won’t stop.

In other news, Slumdog Millionaire performed about what we expected – we figured at least $10 million – and it took in $12.2 million with its Oscar bounce. Also, He’s Just Not That Into You, Paul Blart and Coraline took in between $5-6 million each – solid takes.

The only other film in wide release, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, bombed, coming in in the 8th slot.

Here’s this week’s numbers:

Madea Goes to Jail – $16.5M ($64.8M total)
Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience – $12.7M ($12.7M total)
Slumdog Millionaire – $12.2M ($115M total)
Taken – $9.95M ($108M total)
He’s Just Not That Into You – $5.88M ($78.5M total)
Paul Blart: Mall Cop – $5.6M ($128M total)
Coraline – $5.25M ($61.1M total)
Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li – $4.65M ($4.65M total)
Confessions of a Shopaholic – $4.49M ($33.7M total)
Fired Up! – $3.8M ($10.1M total)

Movie Buzz: Madea rules; Star Trek, Transformers 2, Shrek news

Academy Awards aside, here’s the latest film buzz.

Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail took in $41.1 million to hog the box office. That’s $10 more than the top estimates for Perry’s film – proving again how well his films are doing. Taken, Coraline, He’s Just Not That Into You and Slumdog Millionaire did well – and all the films will probably top $100 million at the box office (joining the amazing Paul Blart for 2009). Friday the 13th tumbled to $7.8 million, and it will top out around $70 million – enough for a sequel. Fired Up! fizzled – coming in 9th. Taken is turning out to be a surprise hit – nearing $100 million. We love Liam Neeson, so anything that gets him back into the theatres is worth it in our book.

Madea Goes to Jail – $41.1M
Taken – $11.4M
Coraline – $11M
He’s Just Not That Into You – $8.54M
Slumdog Millionaire – $8.05M
Friday the 13th – $7.83M
Confessions of a Shopaholic – $7.02M
Paul Blart: Mall Cop – $7M
Fired Up! – $6M
The International – $4.45M

New movies this weekend: Madea goes to Jail, Fired Up!

madeo
There are only two films going out in wide release this Oscar weekend, including cheerleader flick Fired up! and Tyler Perry’s latest, Madea Goes to Jail. Expect Madea to capture this week’s crown (I doubt anyone underestimates Perry again). The other main business will be holdovers, including Friday the 13th, Coraline, He’s Just Not That Into You, Taken, Paul Blart, and Confessions of a Shopaholic. All of the holdovers have shown solid legs (save for Friday the 13th, and while it will drop a lot, it should still do well).

Madea Goes to Jail stars Tyler Perry as he plays a 1/2 million different characters (including the title character) in the 17th Madea film. Lion’s Gate won’t preview the film for critics, but it doesn’t really matter. This film is bulletproof – as all of Perry’s films are. If you like Madea and Perry’s sense of comedy, you’ll like this. If you find it stupid, you’ll probably find it stupid. Perry has created quite an amazing empire. In addition to simply making his movies inexpensively, Perry knows his audience. He doesn’t try and overreach, doesn’t try and be what he’s not – or make what they aren’t expecting. In the process, he’s made a boatload of money too – bully to him.

Tyler Perry certainly has little to fear from Fired Up! The cheerleader comedy is getting dreadful to mediocre reviews. Shots of hot girls in skimpy outfits will only get you so far. This is the sort of disposable teen comedy that will play poorly outside of girls. Watch for an okay opening and then it’ll fall off the map.
