Jack wanted an explosion and he got his explosion, on the explosive season-ender of “Lost.” It was a mind-bending finale that, in the best tradition of the series, cleared things up, then confused them again, with exhilarating richness.
Spoiler alert: Promises were kept to the audience on the two-hour episode, aired Wednesday. For example, the never-before-seen uber-boss of the island, Jacob, scored a prominent and visible role. He did, that is, until he was stabbed to death by Ben (Michael Emerson) as angry payback after decades of neglect and sacrifice.
Then, with Jacob’s dying breath, he warned, “They’re coming.” One almost-certain fatality: Juliet, who had plunged to the bottom of a shaft where, moments before, Jack had dropped his handy nuclear warhead. It failed to trigger on cue. But Juliet, gravely injured, pounded the balky bomb with a stone to set it off and fulfill Jack’s mission. So long, Juliet (and Elizabeth Mitchell, who played her). Maybe.

- from AP

”The Incident” confirmed for me one of the few correct theories I’ve come up with this year: That season 5 was a mirror to season 2, they’ve been setting up a sixth season that will resemble season 1, thus completing the moebius strip narrative of Lost. ”The Incident” certainly resembled season 2’s finale, the title of which, ”Live Together, Die Alone,” was name-checked by Juliet last night. There was a story line involving castaway treachery (Michael = Alterna-Locke). Both episodes shared the Four Toed Statue as a plot point, although ”The Incident” gave us a better look at what it once looked like back in the day. (Was that a crocodile head?) Both episodes culminated with the destruction of the Hatch, perpetrated in each case by lovelorn characters hoping their sacrifice would somehow, someway save the lives of their friends. And finally, both episodes were about activating ”quibbles”. As in: A plot device, common to fantasy/science fiction, that allows a character to cheat the literal obligations of a promise, contract, or prophecy. Also see: loophole. Desmond had the failsafe, while Jacob had… – from EW

Except, it turns out that Locke may not be Locke. Because look, there’s his body in a box carted around by a subset of the Others and when as “Locke” finally confronts Jacob, it is with in dialogue most reminiscent of Mr. Black. But Ben, a bitter Cain to “Locke’s” Abel — why did Jacob never let him into his holy presence until now? — dutifully wields his knife. Meanwhile, over at the Swan, Jack has dumped the bomb into the power pit, except it doesn’t do much but turn the hole into a giant magnet that sucks up every bit of metal, including a chain that somehow gets wrapped around Juliet’s waist. Sawyer catches hold of her but to save the man she loves (and because we hear Mitchell’s already signed onto another show) Juliet lets go and falls, like Alice to the bottom of the rabbit hole, where, choosing grief and frustration over gratitude that she is miraculously still alive, she beats on the hydrogen bomb until it finally explodes. Or at least it seems to explode. In a negative reflection of “The Sopranos” finale, the screen goes white. – from LAtimes

As ABC’s Lost hits its fifth-season finale, the situation is tense — whether you’re talking past, present or future. In Lost’s present day, John Locke wants to kill the mysterious island’s mystery man, Jacob. Thirty years in the past, Jack Shepherd thinks exploding a hydrogen bomb will let him and his fellow castaways, including Locke, avoid being stranded on the island in the future.

If viewers don’t quite know what time it is, they should have a better sense of where the show is headed — about 90% worth — after Wednesday’s two-hour season-ender (9 ET/PT, with a season recap at 8), the executive producers say. – from USAToday

TVGuide.com: We have two hours left in the season. Is it going to take Locke, Ben and Richard 119 minutes to get to Jacob?
Michael Emerson: It’s going to take a while. I mean, we’ve been making our way to Jacob for a long, long time. I think we can last a little bit longer.

TVGuide.com: Is it safe to say we will meet him in this finale?
Emerson: Jacob is certainly a character in the final two episodes. [An ABC spokesperson interjects to say, "We can neither confirm nor deny that Jacob will be in the season finale."] There seems to be a suggestion that we’re moving in that direction, but what Jacob might be or how he might be revealed, if he ever is, is one of the juicy surprises of future Lost work.

TVGuide.com: Might Ben and Richard try to stage a coup to overthrow Locke?
Emerson: Ben and Richard have always seemed to me to have a somewhat fraught and edgy relationship. I don’t think Ben is in a position right now to make aggressive alliances with anybody. Ben is doing well at this point to put one foot in front of the other.

- from TVGuide

AVC: Do you have any predictions for Ben in the sixth and final season?

ME: No, I don’t know. I wouldn’t even venture to try and second-guess Damon Lindelof. He’s so brilliant. I’m really curious to where it will go. People say, “What new angles and developments for your character do you long for?” and I say I don’t really long for any. I think Ben has a kind of constancy, that Ben’s mission remains the same. His character is rather set. I’ll be curious to see what sorts of challenges or situations they provide for me. Having said that, they may completely change the character, for all I know. [Laughs.] I don’t think so, though. I’ll be glad to be in it, because I’ll be curious to see how far into the last season I’ll survive. We’re going to have to start losing people next year. – from the Onion

Question: Any spoilers about “Lost’s” season finale? Please! –Sarah
Ausiello: Funny, we posed that exact question to Jorge Garcia at the Hollywood premiere of “Star Trek” earlier this week. “People will find out why (Hurley) got on the plane and how he came to get that guitar case in his hands,” he said. “I’ve been wondering about that, too. I remember at one point asking a question about it and getting a, ‘We don’t know yet.’ I had to ask once, ‘How heavy is it? Is it just a guitar? Is it something else? How heavy is it supposed to be?’ Sometimes I get an empty case to lug around in a scene and sometimes it has a guitar in it, but we don’t actually know what’s in it because that has not been (revealed) yet. It could be a case full of food or money or guns or papers or anything. So you see me get the case by the finale, but I don’t know that we will find out what’s in it. It was hard for me to play because at first I did not understand why Hurley would have ever changed his mind about going back to the island, and I’m sure fans are thinking the same thing. So it will be nice to be able to give them that information.” – from MSNBC

As a Lost fan yourself, how shocking did you find this season’s finale? Is it more shocking or less that the season-three finale where we learned Jack and Kate got off the Island?
Ours is a show that specializes in big shock endings, but I think season five…None of the other shock endings left me wondering how the show goes on. We have two kinds of huge shocks at the end of this one. Each one alone would be enough to keep an audience eating its own soul for the whole hiatus, but with two, I don’t know what you can do with that. – from E!

Television shows including NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” ABC’s “Lost” and HBO’s “Entourage,” as well as the YouTube Web site, were among 36 winners of Peabody Awards announced Wednesday by the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communications. The awards, for excellence in electronic media, are given in both entertainment and news and information categories. “Lost” was recognized for being an “innovative, mind-bending adventure series, “Entourage” for being a “wicked take on Hollywood,” and “SNL” was cited specifically for its satirical commentary on last year’s political campaigns. Other winners in entertainment included the AMC drama series “Breaking Bad,” the HBO miniseries “John Adams,” the Metropolitan Opera’s “Live in HD” series, and the cable channel Turner Classic Movies for its dedication to classic films. – From NY Times

Is Evangeline Lilly leaving Lost? Rumors are out that she’s auditioning for roles for new shows next year – even though the show is scheduled to run for another year. Frankly, the writers have given her crap to do since 2nd season – except whine. I don’t blame her for wanting something better. They turned a great character into a whiner.

The Simpsons have been renewed two more years. Already in its 20th year, it will go on forever. I think a great gag in the new Star Trek movie or some other scifi show would be for them to be watching new Simpsons episodes. This ensures the show will surpass “Gunsmoke” as the longest-running prime-time US television series.

Jerry Seinfeld is coming back to TV with a reality show – The Marriage Ref. The will “feature opinionated celebrities, comedians and sports stars who will candidly comment, judge and offer different strategies for real-life couples in the midst of a classic marital dispute.” Hmmm…I guess we’ll wait and see on this one. It is Seinfeld, so hopefully is will subvert and twist the reality convention to the extreme.

William Shatner is toying with the idea of running for prime minister of Canada. I think Shatner is going off the deep end, but hey, Captain Kirk running a nation – I’ll vote for that (okay I can’t, but you get the idea).

Grey’s Anatomy is talking about giving Meredith a half brother. Yes, another sibling. Talk about not having any ideas left. I just don’t know where this friggin’ show is going.

Lots of fun “Lost” stuff coming out with the return of the show tonight.

My wish list:

- Kill Juliet – she does nothing. Her back stories are boring.
- Have Kate stop friggin’ whining. When did they write her into such a whiner?
- More season 1 Locke. That Locke was cool. I don’t know what he is now. Dead? Maybe.
- What’s Jeremy Davies up to? More of him this year. Thanks.
- More smoke monsters. More polar bears. Add some monkeys. Monkeys are always funny.

Here’s some of fun from around the Internet.

Michael Emerson Spills Lost Secrets:

So what do you need to know? Well, for starters, the time travel-kookiness is off the charts in season five. But that’s OK. They’re making it up to us. How? Well, according to Carlton: “It’s the season of Josh.” Yes, to counteract the hard-core sci-fi/physics/time-travel-loop-the-loop stuff this year (Daniel Faraday knows all, and boy does he tell all), the writers are making sure that Sawyer (Josh Holloway) and his time-travel-loathing testy redneck temperament are front and center to soften the blow. His shirtless chest will also be featured prominently, but let’s focus, shall we? So what extra Sawyer goodness are we getting this season? Read on for that, a sneak peek at episode two and some tease-y goodies about episode three! – From eonline.com

To understand most shows, all you need is time, a television and the ability to understand English. For “Lost,” we needed two physics professors. Luckily for The Post, Dr. Michio Kaku of City University here in New York, and Richard Muller of the University of California at Berkeley, are not only experts in their field, they’re big fans of ABC’s sci-fi series, which returns in a two-hour premiere this Wednesday. – From NY Post

Follow along as I live blog the most anticipated session of press tour: The Q&A with Lost bosses Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse! As an added bonus, I’ll be sprinkling in mild spoilers about this season’s third episode, which ABC just screened for us as a precursor to the main event. Let’s get to it! – From EW.com

Finally, enjoy the Fine Brothers Lost parody, featuring the cast of Heroes!

TV Guide and Docarzt have some yummy tidbits and reviews on the upcoming Lost premiere.

The first seasons’ flashbacks now seem utterly quaint. And the more recent flash-forwards? Relatively simple. As promised, previewed and teased by the producers of Lost ever since Season 4 came to a close, the next cycle of episodes introduce a new storytelling “device” of sorts that might make you want to keep a notepad and pen next to your TV remote. But enough about that. No, really — that’s enough. I can’t say more, given the confidentiality request that prefaced the first two Season 5 episodes made available to the press. Instead, I will simply note that the episodes “Because You Left” and “The Lie” offer compelling twists for both the half-dozen “survivors” of Oceanic flight 815 as well as those who are still on the island (wherever it may be). – From TV Guide

Speaking of Sawyer, he remains shirtless for the entire first hour plus the first eight minutes of the second episode. (ABC, you owe me big time for spreading the word on that.) – From TV Guide

It’s now 10:00pm est, I’ve completed my umpteenth viewing of the first and second episodes of LOST’s fifth season and in a strange sense I wish I hadn’t seen them. Why? Because, first of all my hiatus has been extended by a week. Getting an early glimpse is great, but now I have to live with knowing that my steady stream of LOST goodness won’t settle into a regular rhythm until January 28th. Worse than that, though, is the fact that these episodes were so damn good, the wait is going to be infinitely more agonizing than it should be. Waiting for LOST is bad enough, as we all know, waiting when you know first hand that LOST has returned in top form, better than ever, to brighten up a blighted tvscape like a literal beacon of hope… well, direct me to the nearest cryostasis chamber – I’d like to sleep the next four-weeks off. – From Docarzt
