LeBron’s buzzer-beater lifts Cavs over Magic
LeBron James made a fadeaway 3-pointer over Orlando’s Hedo Turkoglu as the final horn sounded Friday night to give the Cleveland Cavaliers a 96-95 victory over the Orlando Magic.
LeBron James – NBA MVP

LeBron rules. We can’t argue with this. The man is a machine and deserves this as much as anyone. Here’s some news about the win, as well as some of LeBron’s top plays for 2008/09.
LeBron’s top plays of 2008-09
On one of the biggest days of his life, LeBron James took the long way home. Once inside his hometown’s city limits, James pulled his high-powered Ferrari off I-77 and drove the back roads to St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, his alma mater. Turning on Maple Street, he went past his first house on Hickory. Then, it was past the one on Silver Street, where his mother, Gloria, began raising him by herself. James visited The Boondocks, where he and his friends first dribbled on the playgrounds. James retraced the steps on Monday. His path to NBA superstardom. An unstoppable offensive force who became an elite defender this season, James claimed the league MVP, receiving the award in the gym where he first became a star. “This is a place where all my dreams started and where I thought they could become real,” James said. “There’s really not a better place.” – From ESPN
Cleveland Cavaliers set franchise record for wins
LeBron James sensed something special about this Cleveland team from the outset. He liked the talent, the chemistry, the vibe. Months later, his instincts were correct. These Cavaliers are like no others. James scored 22 points with 11 assists and made all the right moves in the closing minutes as the too-tough-at-home Cavaliers set a franchise record with their 58th win — and 10th straight — by beating the New Jersey Nets 98-87 on Wednesday night. – From ESPN
LeBron, Wade go wild in Cavs-Heat match-up
In a matchup of the top two scorers in the NBA, LeBron James tallied 42 points as Cleveland rallied to beat Miami, 107-100. NBA leading scorer Dwyane Wade of Miami tallied 41 points in defeat.
LeBron James watched Dwyane Wade steal the ball, drive for a reverse dunk that gave the Miami Heat an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter, and summoned Mo Williams for a quick meeting. “It’s up to us,” James told Williams. With that, the comeback got started. James scored 42 points, Williams got 15 of his 30 points in the final 7:14 to lead a stirring rally, and the Cleveland Cavaliers dominated the final minutes to beat the Heat 107-100 on Monday night. – From ESPN
Basketball Buzz: LeBron rules, Brand (maybe Bogut) out for year, Allen an All-Star
Spike Lee – a die hard Knick fan – gave LeBron James the nod over Kobe Bryant for the best performance in Madison Square Garden. The Knicks fans are dreaming of LeBron coming to NY in 2010.
Philadelphia’s big splash into free agency ended with Elton Brand going on the DL for the rest of the year. Brand will have shoulder surgery.
The Bucks lost shooting guard Michael Redd. The Magic lost point guard Jameer Nelson. The two teams got together to help each other with the Bucks sending point guard Tyronn Lue to Orlando, and the magic shipping back shooting guard Keith Bogans. Nothing major, but nice swap of extra parts for each teams.
Speaking of the Bucks, Andrew Bogut’s back is worse than expected. X-rays found a stress fracture. There’s a chance he’ll return, but with his history, the Bucks will play it safe with the big man.
Veteran Ray Allen was named to the all-star game, replacing the injured Jameer Nelson. Ray still has one of the sweetest shots in the game.
LeBron goes wild at the Garden: 52 pts, 11 assists, 10 rebounds
LeBron James showed the world why he’s the best with a triple double, including 52 points, versus the Knicks at Madison Sqaure Garden. No doubt looking to prove to folks that Kobe’s 62 two nights before was no big deal, LeBron showed an amazing all around game that lead the Cavs to victory.
Of course, this might just show how bad the Knicks are – but that’s another story. Two nights after the greatest scoring show in Madison Square Garden history, the building filled once more with tension and anticipation and some 38,000 eyeballs trained on the N.B.A.’s other transcendent star. LeBron James is not Kobe Bryant — as both players will readily attest — although they are once again circling each other in a dynamic duel for the most valuable player award. Bryant lit up the Garden for 61 points Monday night, setting the stage for James, who was more than ready to continue the scoring barrage. – From NY Times
LeBron James couldn’t catch Kobe Bryant, so he settled for matching Michael Jordan. James scored a season-high 52 points in his 21st career triple-double, joined Jordan as the only players with multiple 50-point games at the present Madison Square Garden, and led Cleveland to a 107-102 victory over New York on Wednesday night. – From ESPN
Cavaliers soaring – now 22-0 at home
The Cleveland Cavaliers have been stepping up big of late.
The best player in the world, LeBron James, will lead the east in the upcoming All-Star game.
Next, they crushed the Clippers Friday night to send the team to a 22-0 record a home.
They also got center Zydrunas Ilgauskas back from his broken foot, making one of the league’s best teams even better.
Finally, Cav coach Mike Brown will coach the eastern all-stars in two weeks.
Not a bad week.
Basketball Buzz: Yow dies, LeBron Soars, Dallas Acadamy Scores
North Carolina State women’s hall of fame basketball coach Kay Yow died from cancer. She was 66.
LeBron James showed why he is the best in business last night with his buzzer beating 3 pointer.
The Dallas Academy girls, whose 100-0 defeat a couple of weeks ago as ignited a firestorm of controversy about sportsmanship, have come out on top of this debacle. They are getting invites from Mark Cuban to attend a Mavericks game in his luxury, possible uniforms from Reebok, and visits from all the major networks. We still think the opposing team’s coach should get their ass kicked to the side for such an affair, but the Dallas Academy players seem more forgiving than we are. Power to them.
The Memphis Grizzlies were rejected by Avery Johnson, going with Lionel Hollins (for the third time – this time without the interim tag).
NBA All-Stars Announced
Not bad selections – save for Iverson. Devin Harris should probably be in the mix instead. Howard, Paul, Wade and LeBron are probably the best fraking players in the league (Kobe is in the next tier, in case you want to know). Stoudemire is an okay pick, but there’s little defense there. Still, we have to remember these are popularity contests more than anything, but the fans did okay. Guys like Duncan and Garnett still play both ends of the floor well.
Leading vote-getter Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic highlighted the Eastern Conference All-Star starters, while Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant led the Western Conference’s starting five. The voting totals were announced Thursday night, less than a month from the tip-off of the NBA’s All-Star Game, to be held Sunday, February 15 in Phoenix. Howard will be joined in the Eastern Conference frontcourt by forwards Kevin Garnett of Boston and LeBron James of Cleveland, while Detroit’s Allen Iverson and Miami’s Dwyane Wade round out the conference’s starting five. – From Sports Network
Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard — leading the NBA in rebounds, blocked shots and double-doubles — became the first player to receive 3 million votes from fans to lead this season’s All-Star team. He got 3,150,181 votes when the count was released on Thursday, easily topping the previous record of 2,558,278 votes collected by Houston’s Yao Ming four years ago. The Feb. 15 game in Phoenix will mark the third All-Star trip for Howard, who’ll be starting for the second time. “Wow, what a blessing,” said Howard, the 6-foot-11 (2.11-meter) center who dressed in full Superman regalia, cape and all, on the way to winning last year’s slam dunk competition. “That is what I took it as, a blessing from God and then the fans. It’s just a great honor and I was surprised, but like always I thank the fans for everything they have done for us.” – From USA Today

LeBron considers extension

A few NBA teams are clearing cap room for the summer of 2010, but LeBron James’ future might be long decided by then. James told the Cleveland Plain Dealer he is pleased with the Cleveland Cavaliers’ improvement and is considering signing an extension during this summer. “You play out this season of course; I will consider it,” James told the Plain Dealer on Saturday before the Cavs practiced at the Pepsi Center. – From ESPN.com
