Box Office Results: Madea slays Jonas Brothers; Slumdog, Taken keep pace

taken-poster-bigA few surprises for this weekend’s box office. The first was ass kicking the Jonas Brothers took at the hands of Tyler Perry’s Madea. The Jonas Brothers film was expected to do at least $20 million, but only managed $12.7 million, allowing Madea Goes to Jail to keep the box office title.

The second surprise was the continuing strong performance of Taken – which took in $10 million to rise over the $100 million mark. This film simply won’t stop.

In other news, Slumdog Millionaire performed about what we expected – we figured at least $10 million – and it took in $12.2 million with its Oscar bounce. Also, He’s Just Not That Into You, Paul Blart and Coraline took in between $5-6 million each – solid takes.

The only other film in wide release, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, bombed, coming in in the 8th slot.

Here’s this week’s numbers:

Madea Goes to Jail – $16.5M ($64.8M total)
Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience – $12.7M ($12.7M total)
Slumdog Millionaire – $12.2M ($115M total)
Taken – $9.95M ($108M total)
He’s Just Not That Into You – $5.88M ($78.5M total)
Paul Blart: Mall Cop – $5.6M ($128M total)
Coraline – $5.25M ($61.1M total)
Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li – $4.65M ($4.65M total)
Confessions of a Shopaholic – $4.49M ($33.7M total)
Fired Up! – $3.8M ($10.1M total)

New Movies this week: Jonas Brothers, Street Fighter

jonas-brothers-3d-movie-concert-posterIt’s not an exciting week for films – unless you’re a 12-year old girl, and then the new Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience film will be right up your alley. The Jonas Brothers film should soar to the top of the box office with only one other new film available nationwide – Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (just rolls of your tongue, doesn’t it). Watch for some holdovers to continue to do well, including Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail and Coraline. Not sure how well Taken and He’s Just Not That Into You will hold up, but they should be in the top 10, along with the incredible Paul Blart. We should also see a surge (how big, not sure) with Slumdog Millionaire after it’s Oscar coming out party.

Here’s this week’s new films:

Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience – The early buzz is nothing special, but that won’t matter for this film. It’ll open huge, playing in premium priced theaters, and rake in a ton.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li – The film wasn’t screened for critics, which is rarely a good sign. Early word is that it’s what you expect – bad. Not just bad, but really freaking bad. Here’s a review from aint-it-cool-news that sums up a lot of the talk.

ShowBiz Minute: Spears, Jonas Brothers, Pink

Britney Spears’ former boyfriend, Adnan Ghalib, charged with three felonies; Jonas Brothers premiere concert movie in L.A.; Pink plays secret gig in France to warm up for world tour.

We love Malia and Sasha!

sasha-malia

We love Malia and Sasha! We don’t have to have to call them Malia and Sasha Obama. They’re like Madonna – they’re beyond last names.

Aren’t they just adorable? Why do we love them? Well, they get a puppy (get the Labradoodle, girls). Who didn’t want a puppy? If you said yourself, you’re a cruel hearted bastard. They’re helping the economy by causing people to bonkers over fashion. J. Crew are peeing their pants after the inauguration.

Why else? Hot movie stars want to babysit them. They got the hottest teen band to show up at their house. They’re beanie babies for cryin’ out loud!

Did I say they’re adorable?

Any other reason to love Malia and Sasha?

How about this: they offer a display of energy, exuberance, innocence, fun and youth, mixed with class and dignity in circus atmosphere. After Bush 43, we could all use a little bit of that.

Also, they’re adorable.
