Okay, this is looking pretty cool.

In Iron Man 2, the scarlet and golden-metaled hero must face an adversary with some amazing gadgets of his own. Whiplash (Mickey Rourke) sports a power pack on his chest that looks similar to the one that Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) uses. “The technologies are definitely related,” says director Jon Favreau. “That’s part of the core theme of the film.” The villain’s alter ego, Ivan Vanko, is a Russian who “has constructed his own version of a suit,” Favreau says. Among the creative innovations: a pair of whips, powered by the suit’s glowing chest piece, that are expected to keep Iron Man cracking. Whiplash “is going to light them up,” Rourke quips.- From USA Today

As followers of Jon Favreau’s on-set tweets will know, today is the half-way point in the Iron Man 2 shoot as the production starts to take shape. Favreau recently gave Empire a few pointers on Tony Stark’s arc as he faces down new villains Whiplash (Mickey Rourke) and Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell). “Tony’s expected to be a role model and I don’t think he’s ready to be one. He’s under a great deal of pressure and when you’re under pressure, I think you find outlets for that. That’s one of the tensions of the film: it’s one thing to say you’re Iron Man, and another thing to actually become Iron Man.” – From Empire

He’s suited up and ready to save the world! Back in action on the Iron Man 2 set, Robert Downey Jr. shoots a scene for the action film Wednesday in Los Angeles. The Jon Favreau-directed movie also stars Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow and Samuel L. Jackson.

Tony Stark is out of the superhero closet, and it’s no picnic. The sequel to last summer’s blockbuster, which began shooting three weeks ago and opens May 7, 2010, takes place six months after Stark revealed his identity as Iron Man, says director Jon Favreau. And the development is playing out with unexpected results. “How many superheroes are open about their true identities?” he asks. “We wanted to play with that idea. “Marvel made a choice, and it was a very, very bad choice. They didn’t keep their word. They didn’t honor my contract. They produced a great bounty with the first one but they put it all in the storehouse and you were not allowed in. They did the same thing with Gwyneth Paltrow, from what I’ve been told. They did it with almost everyone except Robert Downey [Jr.]. One of the things that actors need to learn to do is always stick together, one for all and all for one. I’ve seen the script, I know what’s going to happen, but I’m not revealing anything. I believe in karma. When someone does something wrong, you don’t have to get them back. Kate Mara and Clark Gregg have joined Marvel’s “Iron Man 2,” being directed by Jon Favreau and currently shooting in Manhattan Beach, Calif. Mara’s role is being kept under wraps. Gregg is returning as Agent Phil Coulson of S.H.I.E.L.D. – from THR

According to Favreau, the “Iron Man 2” director has reprised his role as Happy Hogan, Tony Stark’s bodyguard sidekick. While the character was rather subdued in the first film, it sounds like Favreau’s role will be significantly more colorful in the sequel — the actor-turned-director has already been involved in stunt work. “Woke up sore from doing stunt work last night,” Favreau posted on April 18th. “I shoulda known it was coming when the stuntwoman said goodbye by saying ‘Take some Advil.’” – from MTV

Robert Downey Jr. spills nuggets on Iron Man 2/Sherlock Holmes

Yesterday I attended the international press day for “The Soloist” as a reporter for our partner website Omelete. Since Robert is extremely busy filming “Iron Man 2”, he was only doing limited press. Thankfully, I was one of the lucky ones that got to participate in a roundtable interview. In the coming days I’ll be posting the full transcript, but with demand for “Iron Man 2” news as high as any film going right now, I figured you might want to know what Robert said right now. – from Collider

Movie Buzz: two more versions of Watchmen coming, The Losers casting, Rourke out of Iron Man 2, Linda Hamilton to Terminator

Linda Hamilton is in talks to to be part of Terminator Salvation. Rumor has it that it’s just doing some voiceover to intro the new film, but let’s hope that it’s more. It would be nice to see the real mama Connor show up.

Zach Snyder says there are two other version of Watchmen being planned – a possible director’s cut theatrical version for July (3 hours 10 minutes) and then a orgasmic DVD version (3 hours 25 minutes). Well, at least they’re letting us know now so we don’t get new version upon new version thrust upon us, telling us it’s the ‘ultimate’ or ‘restored’ or whatever (that’s sticking it to you, Mr. Lucas and Mr. Coppola).

More comic book/movie stuff, Jeffrey Dean Morgan is slated to head the cast of The Losers – a DC-Vertigo property about some black ops commandos who are set up by their own government, only to survive and set out to even the score.

Mickey Rourke is looking doubtful for Iron Man 2.

In one of those ‘please don’t do it’ modes, someone is planning a remake of the classic Slap Shot. Here’s has five reasons it’s a stupid idea.

Robert Downey Jr. said that Mickey Rourke will NOT be playing the Crimson Dynamo in Iron Man 2. When asked if Rourke would be playing Whiplash, Downey was unable to confirm or deny that report, adding that “maybe it’s some semblance of both.”

Hollywood is looking to make a bio pic on Ernest Hemingway. Who to play the celebrated author and drinker? Russell Crowe wouldn’t be bad. Robert Downey Jr.? Lots of good ideas.

Downey also dishes a bit on his new Sherlock Holmes film – plus there’s a new photo.

The Oscar nominees luncheon was held today. I get this image of cafeteria and bunch of people eating pasta salad and ham and potato casserole made by old ladies in the lunchroom.
