New in Theaters this weekend: Public Enemies, Ice Age 3D

Fourth of July weekend doesn’t offer a typical massive film. Instead, we have one sqaurely aimed at adults and the other at kids. Both Public Enemies, starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale, and Ice Age 3D, actually opened this past Wednesday. Ice Age should take the crown this weekend, with about $45 million for the actual weekend – and $65 for the five day period after opening. Public Enemies will actually come in third this weekend – taking in around $25 million over the weekend and $40 million since it opened. Transformers, the monstrosity, will likely come in second over the weekend, garning around $45 million – which means it could top Ice Age. Transformers could pass the $300 million mark when all is said and done. Nothing else is opening in wide release. The Hangover and the Proposal should both snag around $10 million each – with the Hangover passing the $200 million mark – a true surprise smash for this year.
New this weekend:
Public Enemies
Directed by Michael Mann and starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. The film has been getting mostly good reviews – some great – but praise is not universal. Also, audiences are reportedly a little disappointed in the lack of action – expecting more shoot ‘em up. The R rating and long film lenght further limit its appeal. The film should do pretty well – maybe reaching $100 million for its run. Respectable, but not great.
Ice Age 3D
This is one of those films you know exactly what to expect. Reviews aren’t as good as the previous films, but it shouldn’t matter. The 3D is reportedly excellent. It will be a big hit with the kids – with enough adult moments to make it worth our time.
