Movie Box Office: Friday the 13th scares up $42.2 Million

friday13
Only surprise here was how much loot Friday the 13th took in. The weekend itself did well, but no other new movies really stepped up huge. Taken and Coraline have kept up their take well, as has He’s Just Not That Into You – which was a natural for this Valentine’s weekend.

1. “Friday the 13th,” $42.2 million.
2. “He’s Just Not That Into You,” $19.6 million.
3. “Taken,” $19.3 million.
4. “Confessions of a Shopaholic,” $15.4 million.
5. “Coraline,” $15.3 million.
6. “Paul Blart: Mall Cop,” $11.7 million.
7. “The International,” $10 million.
8. “The Pink Panther 2,” $9 million.
9. “Slumdog Millionaire,” $7.2 million.
10. “Push,” $6.9 million.

Friday the 13th promised a high body count. It delivered. The franchise reboot has packed theaters like no other this President’s Day weekend, scoring an estimated $42 2 million from Friday-Sunday. Final numbers and standings will be out tomorrow. Elsewhere, Confessions of a Shopaholic ($15.4 million) looks to do no better than a fourth-place debut, while Joaquin Phoenix looks to finish off his movie career on a high note, the David Letterman, gum-chewing thing notwithstanding. – From eonline.com

What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than to watch college kids get slaughtered in a remake of “Friday the 13th”? The revival of the venerable slasher franchise easily took the No. 1 spot at the North American box office this weekend, setting a new record for a horror opening with estimated sales of $42.2 million, distributor Warner Bros. Pictures said on Sunday. – From Reuters

Warner Bros./New Line’s redo “Friday the 13th” scared up the best opening ever for a horror movie in grossing an estimated $42.2 million from 3,105 theaters through Sunday. Film, breathing new life into the classic franchise, is on its way to posting the best four-day holiday gross ever for a R-rated pic. Studios will report four-day numbers for President’s Day weekend on Monday. – From Variety

Movie Buzz: Friday 13th scores mucho bucks (and a sequal), Bees wins at NAACP Image awards

Friday the 13th scored monster dollars - almost $20 million – on Friday alone. Nothing else scored well, with holdovers grabbing three of top five slots. The International didn’t even dent the top five – coming sixth. Here’s Friday numbers:

Friday the Thirteenth – $20M
He’s Just Not That Into You – $5.05M
Taken – $4.8M
Confessions of a Shopaholic $4.4M
Coraline – $3.1M

Paul Allen has cashed out his Dreamworks investment – which began as $500 million back in 1994. Allen’s Charter Communications just announced it would file for bankruptcy, citing $7 billion of debt.

“The Secret Life of Bees” scored big at the NAACP Image Awards in Los Angeles, taking top picture and top director awards.

And with the success of the new Friday the 13th film, it means sequels are on the way. Shocked? I thought not.

New Movies this Weekend: Shopoholic, International, Friday 13th

We’ve got three movies opening nationwide this weekend. Here’s the roundup:

Isla Fisher stars in ‘Confessions of a Shopoholic’. The film is getting solid reviews, with Fisher getting the lion’s share of praise for her performance. It’s got that ‘chick movie’ vibe, but will probably be a good ‘date’ movie for if you’re looking for something fun for Valentine’s Day.

Friday the 13th – the reboot is on – and, it’s pretty much the same. You get boobs, killings, boobs, more killings, etc. You know if you’re going to like this film before you see it – no reason to believe any critic or review.

The International stars Clive Owen and Naomi Watts – two ‘kinda stars’ who deserve to be more – unfortunately, this film probably won’t do it for either. The film was moved back 1/2 year to reshoot and make into more of an action film – which doesn’t bode well. Now that we’re seeing it, it is getting mediocre to solid reviews – lots of comments that like ‘muddled’ and so on, perhaps a little too complex for its own good. The film is about an evil bank using our money for other purposes (not so shocking in light of recent affairs), with coverups, killings and globe trotting. If you like the ‘corrupt institution being uncovered’ plotline, it’ll probably pass muster.

In the end, if you’re looking for fun (or a date movie), checked out Shopoholic, the week’s best reviewed film. The International will suffice for thriller fans, but not for those looking for something light and easy on the mind. Friday the 13th delivers what you expect – and will satisfy the horror fan base with solid doeses of mayhem and breasts.

‘Friday the 13th’ Returns
