Martin Luther King Jr. biopic to be made

DreamWorks has acquired the life rights to Martin Luther King Jr. and is bringing a biopic on the slain civil rights leader to the bigscreen. Steven Spielberg, Suzanne de Passe and Madison Jones will produce. King, who was assassinated in 1968 in Memphis at the age of 39, copyrighted his speeches, books and famous works during his lifetime. The DreamWorks project marks the first film to be authorized by King’s estate and gives the producers the right to utilize King’s intellectual property — including his famous “I Have a Dream” speech delivered during the 1963 March on Washington — to create the definitive portrait of his life. – From Variety

Tom Cruise seeks next movie projects amid uncertain career

Tom Cruise is narrowing the prospects for his next film, but no matter which he chooses, he has single-handedly propped up the script doctoring biz: Studios have spent millions of dollars in rewrite fees to custom-tailor projects for the star. The frontrunners for his next film appear to be the DreamWorks drama “Motorcade,” to be directed by Len Wiseman, followed by Spyglass remake “The Tourist” (with Charlize Theron), to be helmed by Bharat Nalluri, and Fox action comedy “Wichita” (with Cameron Diaz), which James Mangold will direct. Also still in the mix is MGM’s “The Matarese Circle,” which potentially matches Cruise with Denzel Washington and helmer David Cronenberg. – from Variety

But there is method to all the money-spending, as Cruise has vetoed political thriller “The 28th Amendment” (which would have cast him as the President), and the romantic comedy “Lost for Words.” “28th Amendment” even received an extra polish from “Transformers” writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, but to no avail. – from MTV

DreamWorks’ planned distribution deal with Universal Pictures has collapsed as the parties are unable to agree upon final terms. The failure of the agreement paves the way for Walt Disney Studios, which had earlier sought a distribution deal with DreamWorks, to step in as Steven Spielberg’s new studio home, according to people familiar with the situation. – from LAtimes

Steven Spielberg is on the verge of announcing a six-year, 30-film distribution deal with Walt Disney after the collapse of negotiations last week with Universal Studios. The deal, which would combine Hollywood’s most commercially successful director with its most sophisticated marketing and distribution machine, could be unveiled by Monday. – from FT

DreamWorks is close to inking a distribution deal with Disney that would replace a pact DreamWorks and Universal Pictures agreed upon in October but never signed. Sources close to the DreamWorks-Disney talks said lawyers from both camps were working all weekend and called a deal imminent, saying that it would likely close today or Tuesday. – from Variety
