A single-engine Lancair’s problem with its right landing gear caused the small plane to make a safe, emergency landing at Detroit’s City Airport.
Surrounded by a paparazzi-like media throng and a smattering of supporters as he walked out of the Wayne County Jail at about 12:35 a.m. Tuesday, Kwame Kilpatrick stared at the frenzied crowd for about a minute, grinning widely, saying nothing. Cheers of “We love you, Kwame” rang out, as several men who were serving as the former mayor’s bodyguards held the media scrum at bay, sometimes by shoving them backward. There was much jostling and grumbling as the media fought for a view of Kilpatrick as he stood in his dark suit and tie, surveying the scene, his hair and beard a bit bushier than when he entered the jail 99 days earlier. – From Detroit News
City Official A, with a thick beard, longer hair and noticeably less weight, regained his freedom this morning. It was a little after 12:30 a.m. when Kwame Kilpatrick walked from the Wayne County Jail a short way down one of the grimmest streets in Detroit to a clean, dark Chevy Suburban with “Mr. Muhammad” written in small script on the back. Kilpatrick was subdued and uncharacteristically quiet. He said nothing to the waiting news media. Other than brother-in-law Daniel Ferguson, there appeared to be no family members present, just a civilian security team of self-important, well-dressed men who acted like cops, two lawyers and perhaps a dozen supporters. – From Detroit Free Press
Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has been freed from jail after serving 99 days for two felony perjury convictions, observers said. Kilpatrick, looking shaggy and thinner than when he entered the Wayne County Jail in Detroit, said nothing as he was released Monday, waving as he was whisked off in a Chevy Suburban, The Detroit News reported. – From UPI
I see a Bones episode out of this sad event.
Detroit police searched a vacant warehouse for about 30 minutes after receiving a call from a newspaper that a body was frozen in an elevator shaft inside, according to documents obtained by the Free Press. On Tuesday, police logged a call of a “body in elevator shaft in mid of bldg,” according to police reports. They took the call around 4:46 p.m. and officers dispatched at 4:57 p.m. to an old Detroit Public Schools warehouse on 14th street and Michigan Avenue. – From Detroit Free Press
A newspaper says it took three calls to Detroit authorities over two days before they recovered the body of a man frozen in ice in the elevator shaft of a vacant warehouse. A reporter for The Detroit News got a tip and found the body Tuesday in a former Detroit Public Schools warehouse, the newspaper said Thursday. The reporter called 911 Tuesday and told a female operator about the body, the newspaper said. It said a man returned the call to the newsroom about 20 minutes later and said the body would be retrieved. – From Chicago Tribune
This city has not always been a gentle place, but a series of events over the past few, frigid days causes one to wonder how cold the collective heart has grown. It starts with a phone call made by a man who said his friend found a dead body in the elevator shaft of an abandoned building on the city’s west side. “He’s encased in ice, except his legs, which are sticking out like Popsicle sticks,” the caller phoned to tell this reporter. – From Detroit News
The BMW Z4 roadster was introduced last week at the Detroit auto show. The Z4 sDrive23i is powered by a 2.5-litre in-line six cylinder and making 152kW, and will be available in both a six-speed manual and an auto transmission. Next in line is the Z4 sDrive30i that packs the same 3.0-litre I6 as the current model, making 192kW and 309Nm of torque. It needs 5.8 seconds to reach 100km/h. The company’s best offer is the Z4 sDrive35i, which offers a twin-turbo version of the 3.0-litre and is loaded up with 228kW, reaching 100km/h in 5.2 seconds with the manual transmission, and being a tenth of a second quicker with the seven-speed dual-clutch box. BMW’s all-new Z4’s amazing feature was the folding hard-top, replacing the old canvas roof. It’s a simplified version of the one used on the 3-Series Convertible and can be lowered in just 20 seconds.
The cost of the new Z4 was not announced.
From new lithium ion batteries to updated hybrids, automakers are looking to step up the fuel efficiency of their cars. Toyota announced that the latest Prius model will get a combined 50 miles to the gallon.

No soup for you, Detroit!
Senators voted down a bill to rescue Detroit automakers after a last-ditch attempt to renegotiate the deal died. The Senate voted 52-35 on a shell bill that would have contained language that had the endorsement of the White House and was similar to a version that passed the House of Representatives. The 52 votes in favor of the shell bill were short of 60 needed for passage. – From ABC News
Senate Democrats and the White House failed to find 60 votes to end debate on a $14 billion auto bailout bill and bring it to a vote Thursday night, killing the measure for the year. The 52-35 vote followed the collapse of negotiations between Senate Democrats and Republicans seeking a compromise. – From CNN.com
DETROIT (AP) – Police say they raided a sex-for-cash party involving 19 adult female prostitutes and two 16-year-old girls, including the hostess’s daughter.
Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans says authorities raided the Detroit home about 4 a.m. Sunday and discovered about 20 adult men, 19 adult female prostitutes, the 39-year-old homeowner, her daughter and another 16-year-old, both of whom were dancing partially nude.
Evans says the men paid a $15 cover charge plus whatever the prostitutes charged for sex. It isn’t known whether the underage girls had offered sex for money.
The sheriff says most of the prostitutes and johns were ticketed and released, but the homeowner and three men believed to be involved in operating the party were arrested.
The woman’s daughter was taken into protective custody. The other 16-year-old was released to her parents.
