Walter Cronkite death – dies at age 92

Walter Cronkite dead

And That’s The Way It Is… CBS anchorman Walter Cronkite has died at age 92. Walter Cronkite’s voice provided the backdrop for many of America’s best, brightest, saddest and most trying moments, and the bonds of trust he forged across three decades with millions of CBS News viewers remain the unattainable gold standard of his profession.

Cronkite, who died Friday at 92, worked for CBS News from 1950 through 1981 and was anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News for 19 years. He had been ill for some time.

Rice University historian Douglas Brinkley, whose biography of Cronkite, And That’s the Way it Is: Walter Cronkite and American Journalism, will be published next spring, said Cronkite’s life and career were part and parcel with the era he documented for TV viewers.

“He was brought up in Harry Truman’s Kansas City and in Texas at a time when petroleum was becoming king,” Brinkley said. “He was a correspondent in the main theaters of World War II and, at CBS, he was involved in the heyday of television in a time remembered for the Kennedy assassination, space missions and Vietnam.

“For a historian, it’s looking at our life and times through the life and times of the most respected journalist that America has ever produced. He was known as the most trusted man in America — Uncle Walter — and that remained true. You’d be hard-pressed to find any human being that didn’t like Walter Cronkite.”

From age 6, when he recalls pontificating on the death of President Warren G. Harding, into his 80s, while dictating his oral memoirs to Don Carleton, director of the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas, Cronkite remained the consummate newsman.
“He was such a good journalist because he focused on the news,” Carleton said. “We would be working in Manhattan, and fire trucks would come by on the street below and I would have to talk him out of trying to follow them. He would say, ‘There’s news going on down there.’”

Who Killed Michael Jackson?

Here’s Michael Jackson’s official death certificate. The cause of death is listed as “deferred.” Police Chief William Bratton told CNN on Thursday that police are waiting for the coroner’s report before ruling out any possibilities in their “comprehensive and far-reaching” investigation into the sudden death of the 50-year-old pop star two weeks ago. His comment came as Joe Jackson revealed his own suspicions about his son’s death. “I do believe it was foul play,” Jackson told ABC News’ “Nightline.”

Michael Jackson Death Certificate

The head of Los Angeles police has refused to rule out murder in the investigation into the death of singer Michael Jackson, two weeks ago. Police Chief William Bratton told US news broadcaster CNN that police were awaiting toxicology results. “Are we dealing with a homicide or are we dealing with accidental overdose… I don’t have that information.” – from BBC

Joe Jackson suspects “foul play” may have been involved in the sudden death of his son, Michael Jackson, he told ABC News in an exclusive interview. In fact, the 79-year-old Jackson family patriarch was dumbfounded when he learned his 50-year-old son was being rushed to the hospital after collapsing at home on June 25, he told ABC News’ Chris Connelly in an exclusive interview at the Jackson family compound in Encino, Calif. – from ABC

Bubbles, Galaxy, Mourns over Loss of Michael Jackson

Bubbles

Michael Jackson will be missed by his former pet chimpanzee Bubbles, according to the animal’s carer. The ape was a constant companion to the singer in the 1980s but had to be given up when he became too big and aggressive to have around Michael Jackson’s young family. However, Jackson is reported to have regularly visited him at his new home at an animal sanctuary in north Los Angeles, where he is still alive and well, aged 26. Bob Dunn, an animal trainer who looks after the chimpanzee, said: “Bubbles definitely missed him when they parted and will miss him now. “Chimpanzees are intelligent. They remember people and stuff. Bubbles and Michael were close friends and playmates. “The last time Michael visited, Bubbles definitely recognised and remembered him.” – from Telegraph

Last Picture of Michael Jackson Before Death

Right; Michael Jackson was getting ready for his big comeback with 50 concerts. No way that was going to happen, said our insider. He was in no condition and was extremely frail. As seen in this exclusive picture, this was the REAL condition of Michael Jackson (which is unfortunate) before his death — he was normally pushed around from limo to home in a wheelchair — as seen in the above picture. Even before his death, Michael Jackson was pushed to rehearsal in a wheelchair and described as a “bag full of bones.” This is said news, we love the Thriller era of Michael Jackson — and we were awaiting his comeback. Which, sadly, will never happen. However, now in death, perhaps he will return to relevancy — like the Phoenix from the flames.

Professor Stephen Hawking, one of the world’s foremost physicists and the acclaimed author of “A Brief History of Time,” has been urgently admitted to hospital, Cambridge University said on Monday. Hawking, 67, who is wheelchair-bound and almost completely paralyzed by motor neurone disease, was taken by ambulance to a local hospital in Cambridge, where he teaches as a professor of applied mathematics and theoretical physics. “Professor Hawking is very ill and has been taken by ambulance to Addenbrooke’s Hospital,” the university said. – from Reuters

He announced last year that he would step down from his post as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, a title once held by the great 18th-century physicist Isaac Newton. However, the university said Hawking intended to continue working as Emeritus Lucasian Professor of Mathematic. Hawking had canceled an appearance at Arizona State University on April 6 because of his illness. “Professor Hawking is a remarkable colleague. We all hope he will be amongst us again soon,” said Professor Peter Haynes, head of the university’s Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. – from Chron

Steve Jobs Death “Rumor” from Gizmodo, Apple Stock Tumble

Shares of Apple Inc fell as much as 2 percent on Tuesday after technology website Gizmodo reported a “rumor” that Chief Executive Steve Jobs’s health was declining.

A spokesman for Apple declined to comment on the rumor.

When asked about Jobs’s health, the spokesman said “if ever Steve or the board of directors decided that he was no longer capable of doing his job as CEO of Apple, I’m sure they will let you know.” – from Reuters

According to a previously reliable source, Apple misrepresented the reasons behind Macworld and Jobs’ keynote cancellation. Allegedly, the real cause is his rapidly declining health. In fact, it may be even worse than we imagined:

Steves health is rapidly declining. Apple is choosing to remove the hype factor strategically vs letting the hype destroy apple when the inevitable news comes later this spring.

So much for any future one-on-one interviews with Apple(HMC Quote – Cramer on HMC – Stock Picks) CEO Steve Jobs running on the tech blog Gizmodo.
Citing a “solid source,” the blog decided Tuesday to go where few have wanted to tread: pronouncing publicly that Jobs’ health is declining rapidly. Gizmodo’s source, who the blog says has been “100% correct” when passing along product scoops, says this is why Jobs wouldn’t give his traditional keynote address at the company’s MacWorld Expo in January, as the company announced earlier this month.

Jobs was diagnosed with a malignant but less aggressive form of pancreatic cancer in 2004, undergoing surgery to remove a tumor. Subsequent gaunt appearances in the past couple of years have continued, at the very least, to keep the CEO’s health in the back of investors’ minds.

The Gizmodo report infused a minor jolt into Apple’s stock, which had been up more than 1% most of the session. Shares fell as low as $84.72, off 2%, before moving back recently to $85.79, down just 1%.

CNBC subsequently disputed the Gizmodo story, citing its own sources that no new news about Jobs existed and that his health is “just fine as far we as we know.” These sources also reiterated that Jobs’ absence from MacWorld was a result of the company’s plans to no longer invest in the conference. – from The Street
