Patrick Swayze dead

Dirty Dancing film star Patrick Swayze has died aged 57, his publicist says.
Annett Wolf said that the US actor, who had been battling pancreatic cancer for nearly two years, died with family at his side on Monday.
Swayze was diagnosed with advanced stage four pancreatic cancer in January last year.
The actor had been starring in US TV show The Beast since being diagnosed with the disease. He had also planned to write a memoir with his wife.
“Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months,” said a statement by Annett Wolf quoted by the Associated Press.

“Dirty Dancing” star Patrick Swayze has died after an almost two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Annett Wolf, Swayze’s publicist, confirms that the 57-year-old actor died Monday with his family by his side.

It had been reported recently that he had gone home to be with his family.

Swayze’s role in “Dirty Dancing” propelled him to stardom in 1987.

But it was his role in the 1990 romantic drama “Ghost” that raised his celeb status to an even higher level.Swayze’s publicist Annett Wolf says the 57-year-old “Dirty Dancing” actor died Monday with family at his side. He came forward about his illness last spring, but continued working as he underwent treatments.

It was 1987 when Swayze became a star with his performance in “Dirty Dancing,” a coming-of-age story set in a Catskills resort. The 1990 film “Ghost” cemented his status as a screen favorite.

Swayze played a murdered man trying to communicate with his fiancee through a spirit played by Whoopi Goldberg.

He kept on working even after it was disclosed in March 2008 that he had a particularly deadly form of cancer. He starred in “The Beast,” an A&E drama series, and said he and his wife were working on a memoir.

Critics said Swayze was erratic in his choice of roles, reports CBS Radio’s Karyn Regal. He said true actors needed to take chances.

Swayze also didn’t want his head to swell over being declared People Magazine’s “sexiest man alive” in 1991 – a title earned after his erotic pottery scene in “Ghost,” Regal reports. But for many of his fans, that’s the image that will live on.

“My friend and mentor Les Paul died today at 94. He was one of the most stellar human beings I’ve ever known.” — former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash.

“Les Paul was truly a ‘one of a kind.’ We owe many of his inventions that made the rock ‘n roll sound of today to him, and he was the founding father of modern music.” — blues guitarist B.B. King.

“As the ‘Father of the Electric Guitar’, he was not only one of the world’s greatest innovators but a legend who created, inspired and contributed to the success of musicians around the world.” — Dave Berryman, president of Gibson Guitar.

“Three-time GRAMMY winner Les Paul was a musical mastermind whose innovations in electric guitar and recorded music are unparalleled … His magnetic charm and sunny disposition matched his incredible skill set and he will always be remembered with great fondness, humility, and respect.” — Neil Portnow, president of The Recording Academy.

“Les Paul set a standard for musicianship and innovation that remains unsurpassed. He was the original guitar hero, and the kindest of souls.” — guitarist Joe Satriani.

John Hughes is Dead!

johnhughes

One of our favorite directors John Hughes, the director and screenwriter who helped define a young generation with his ’80s films “Sixteen Candles,” “The Breakfast Club” and “Pretty in Pink,” has died, according to The Associated Press. Hughes died suddenly while taking a morning walk in New York City, according to a statement from his spokesman. His spokesman said Hughes had been in Manhattan to visit family and friends.

Actor Matthew Broderick worked with Hughes in 1986 when he played the title character in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” “I am truly shocked and saddened by the news about my old friend John Hughes. He was a wonderful, very talented guy and my heart goes out to his family,” Broderick said.

Not only was Hughes the creative inspiration behind a series of teen-oriented films throughout the 1980s, he also wrote and produced all three Home Alone movies which made Macaulay Culkin a star. In the last decade, Hughes had largely turned his back on Hollywood to run a farm in northern Illinois.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Nancy, two sons and four grandchildren.

Mr. Hughes first began as a screenwriter, gaining notoriety for his screenplay for “National Lampoon’s Vacation,” which became a popular franchise.

But his true success came with his directorial debut, “Sixteen Candles,” which made a star out of its young lead, Molly Ringwald. She went on to become the “teen queen” of the ’80s, appearing also in Mr. Hughes’s films “The Breakfast Club” and “Pretty in Pink.”

Mr. Hughes also wrote and directed “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” a comedy starring Matthew Broderick, about a high school student who calls in sick and heads out on a day of adventures with his best friend and girlfriend. The film helped to solidify the star power of its lead, Matthew Broderick.

Walter Cronkite death – dies at age 92

Walter Cronkite dead

And That’s The Way It Is… CBS anchorman Walter Cronkite has died at age 92. Walter Cronkite’s voice provided the backdrop for many of America’s best, brightest, saddest and most trying moments, and the bonds of trust he forged across three decades with millions of CBS News viewers remain the unattainable gold standard of his profession.

Cronkite, who died Friday at 92, worked for CBS News from 1950 through 1981 and was anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News for 19 years. He had been ill for some time.

Rice University historian Douglas Brinkley, whose biography of Cronkite, And That’s the Way it Is: Walter Cronkite and American Journalism, will be published next spring, said Cronkite’s life and career were part and parcel with the era he documented for TV viewers.

“He was brought up in Harry Truman’s Kansas City and in Texas at a time when petroleum was becoming king,” Brinkley said. “He was a correspondent in the main theaters of World War II and, at CBS, he was involved in the heyday of television in a time remembered for the Kennedy assassination, space missions and Vietnam.

“For a historian, it’s looking at our life and times through the life and times of the most respected journalist that America has ever produced. He was known as the most trusted man in America — Uncle Walter — and that remained true. You’d be hard-pressed to find any human being that didn’t like Walter Cronkite.”

From age 6, when he recalls pontificating on the death of President Warren G. Harding, into his 80s, while dictating his oral memoirs to Don Carleton, director of the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas, Cronkite remained the consummate newsman.
“He was such a good journalist because he focused on the news,” Carleton said. “We would be working in Manhattan, and fire trucks would come by on the street below and I would have to talk him out of trying to follow them. He would say, ‘There’s news going on down there.’”

Bubbles, Galaxy, Mourns over Loss of Michael Jackson

Bubbles

Michael Jackson will be missed by his former pet chimpanzee Bubbles, according to the animal’s carer. The ape was a constant companion to the singer in the 1980s but had to be given up when he became too big and aggressive to have around Michael Jackson’s young family. However, Jackson is reported to have regularly visited him at his new home at an animal sanctuary in north Los Angeles, where he is still alive and well, aged 26. Bob Dunn, an animal trainer who looks after the chimpanzee, said: “Bubbles definitely missed him when they parted and will miss him now. “Chimpanzees are intelligent. They remember people and stuff. Bubbles and Michael were close friends and playmates. “The last time Michael visited, Bubbles definitely recognised and remembered him.” – from Telegraph

Billy Mays Dead at 50

Tampa police say Billy Mays, the television pitchman known for his boisterous hawking of products such as Orange Glo and OxiClean, has died. He was 50. Authorities say Mays was pronounced dead Sunday morning after being found by his wife at home. There were no signs of a break-in, and investigators do not suspect foul play. The coroner’s office expects to have an autopsy done by Monday afternoon.

Mays’ wife, Deborah Mays, says the family doesn’t expect to make any public statements and asked for privacy. Mays was also featured on the reality TV show “Pitchmen” on the Discovery Channel, which followed Mays and Anthony Sullivan in their marketing jobs.

Discovery Channel spokeswoman Elizabeth Hillman released a statement Sunday extending sympathy to the Mays family. “Everyone that knows him was aware of his larger-than-life personality, generosity and warmth,” Hillman’s statement said. “Billy was a pioneer in his field and helped many people fulfill their dreams. He will be greatly missed as a loyal and compassionate friend.”

Last Picture of Michael Jackson Before Death

Right; Michael Jackson was getting ready for his big comeback with 50 concerts. No way that was going to happen, said our insider. He was in no condition and was extremely frail. As seen in this exclusive picture, this was the REAL condition of Michael Jackson (which is unfortunate) before his death — he was normally pushed around from limo to home in a wheelchair — as seen in the above picture. Even before his death, Michael Jackson was pushed to rehearsal in a wheelchair and described as a “bag full of bones.” This is said news, we love the Thriller era of Michael Jackson — and we were awaiting his comeback. Which, sadly, will never happen. However, now in death, perhaps he will return to relevancy — like the Phoenix from the flames.

Patrick Swayze Releases Photo to Correct Death Rumors

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. But for Patrick Swayze just two will do – I’m alive. And it’s clear what cancer-stricken Swayze, 56, is trying to convey as he sits smiling alongside wife Lisa Niemi and their dogs, poodle Lucas and Rhodesian ridgeback puppy Kumasai, at their ranch in New Mexico. The picture, taken last week, was released after a wave of false rumours that Swayze had died. The story originated on U.S. radio station Kiss FM and then circulated on social micro-blogging site Twitter. – from DailyMail

Twitter wrongly declares Patrick Swayze dead

Patrick Swayze’s publicist has been forced to confirm the actor is still alive after false reports of his death raced around the internet, fueled by Twitter. Swayze, 56, was diagnosed with a malignant pancreatic tumor in January 2008, and his battle with the disease has been well chronicled in the media. His death was incorrectly reported on a US radio station yesterday but the false rumor soon gained momentum on Twitter, where users “re-tweeted” or forwarded the message on. Swayze’s publicist was forced to issue a statement: “This is to confirm that Patrick Swayze did not pass away this morning contrary to severely reckless reports stemming from a radio station in Jacksonville, Florida. “Patrick Swayze is alive, well and is enjoying his life and he continues to respond to treatment.”

Patrick Swayze is NOT Dead at 57

patrick_swayze_weight_loss1

Updated: this rumor, which started on the radio, has been verified as not true from Mr. Swayze’s representation (too bad they didn’t return our calls). This morning our inbox was inundated with email messages from reliable sources stating that indeed he passed away, which is the reason we stated this was a “tip” and with a question mark.

Breaking: we’ve been receiving this tip from multiple sources, that actor Patrick Swayze has passed away at the young age of 57. The star of Dirty Dancing and Ghost had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given a 5% chance to survive. Last seen in Los Angeles, the former buff actor had shrunk down to 105lbs due to his chemotherapy treatment. In an interview with Barbara Walters earlier this year, Swayze admitted to being scared and asking “why me?” We have placed many calls in to his representation — and our hearts are with his family. More on this as this story is breaking…

Patrick Swayze is well known in his roles as Dirty Dancing, Ghost, and Road House. Even his younger days of starring in Red Dawn as Jed Eckert, which was presented to the public in 1984 was an outstanding film starring C. Thomas Howell, which they became buddies during the filming of “Outsiders” in 1983. Swayze was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in late January 2008, and has undergone chemotherapy and other treatments at the Stanford University Medical Center. Specifically, Swayze was diagnosed with a type of pancreatic tumor called Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasm (IPMN). n early May 2008, it was widely reported in a number of tabloids that Swayze had undergone surgery to remove part of his stomach after the spread of the cancer and that he had rewritten his will, transferring his property to his wife. As of April 19, 2009, doctors have told Swayze that the cancer has now spread to his liver.

Bea Arthur NSFW Tribute

Emmy-winning actress Bea Arthur, best known as star of the hit TV comedies “Maude” and “Golden Girls,” has died at 86, entertainment news websites reported on Saturday. Arthur, who won Emmy awards for both “Maude” and “Golden Girls,” died of cancer at her Los Angeles home, celebrity website TMZ.com reported.

Beatrice Arthur, the tall, deep-voiced actress whose razor-sharp delivery of comedy lines made her a TV star died Saturday.

Beatrice Arthur, the tall, deep-voiced actress whose razor-sharp delivery of comedy lines made her a TV star in the hit shows “Maude” and “The Golden Girls” and who won a Tony Award for the musical “Mame,” died Saturday. She was 86.
Arthur died peacefully at her Los Angeles home with her family at her side, family spokesman Dan Watt said. She had cancer, Watt said, declining to give further details.
“She was a brilliant and witty woman,” said Watt, who was Arthur’s personal assistant for six years. “Bea will always have a special place in my heart.”
Arthur first appeared in the landmark comedy series “All in the Family” as Edith Bunker’s loudly outspoken, liberal cousin, Maude Finley. She proved a perfect foil for blue-collar bigot Archie Bunker (Carroll O’Connor), and their blistering exchanges were so entertaining that producer Norman Lear fashioned Arthur’s own series.
In a 2008 interview with The Associated Press, Arthur said she was lucky to be discovered by TV after a long stage career, recalling with bemusement CBS executives asking about the new “girl.”
“I was already 50 years old. I had done so much off-Broadway, on Broadway, but they said, `Who is that girl? Let’s give her her own series,’” Arthur said.
“Maude” scored with television viewers immediately on its CBS debut in September 1972, and Arthur won an Emmy Award for the role in 1977.
The comedy flowed from Maude’s efforts to cast off the traditional restraints that women faced, but the series often had a serious base. Her husband Walter (Bill Macy) became an alcoholic, and she underwent an abortion, which drew a torrent of viewer protests. Maude became a standard bearer for the growing feminist movement in America.
The ratings of “Maude” in the early years approached those of its parent, “All in the Family,” but by 1977 the audience started to dwindle. A major format change was planned, but in early 1978 Arthur announced she was quitting the show.
“It’s been absolutely glorious; I’ve loved every minute of it,” she said. “But it’s been six years, and I think it’s time to leave.”
“Golden Girls” (1985-1992) was another groundbreaking comedy, finding surprising success in a television market increasingly skewed toward a younger, product-buying audience.
The series concerned three retirees — Arthur, Betty White and Rue McClanahan — and the mother of Arthur’s character, Estelle Getty, who lived together in a Miami apartment. In contrast to the violent “Miami Vice,” the comedy was nicknamed “Miami Nice.”
As Dorothy Zbornak, Arthur seemed as caustic and domineering as Maude. She was unconcerned about the similarity of the two roles. “Look — I’m 5-feet-9, I have a deep voice and I have a way with a line,” she told an interviewer. “What can I do about it? I can’t stay home waiting for something different. I think it’s a total waste of energy worrying about typecasting.”
The interplay among the four women and their relations with men fueled the comedy, and the show amassed a big audience and 10 Emmys, including two as best comedy series and individual awards for each of the stars.
In 1992, Arthur announced she was leaving “Golden Girls.” The three other stars returned in “The Golden Palace,” but it lasted only one season.
