Vintage Ferrari fetches $12.1 million bid at auction

ferrari

The Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa is without question one of the most beautiful cars ever built, and a 1957 model sold for a record-setting $12.1 million. Ferrari built just 22 Scaglietti-designed Testa Rossas with the signature pontoon fenders between 1957 and 1958. It was a formidable racer – a 300 horsepower V12 and nimble handling will do that – and Testa Rossas won 10 of the 19 races they entered between 1958 and 1961. – From Wired

Disney/Pixar launching new studio

Woody and Buzz are heading north. To accommodate a growing slate of nonfeature projects, Disney and Pixar will launch an animation studio in the fall in Vancouver. The focus will be on Pixar’s legacy characters, including Buzz and Woody from the “Toy Story” films and Lightning McQueen and Mater from “Cars.”

“The operation will be small in size and dedicated to producing short-form quality computer animation for theme parks, DVDs, television and theatrical exhibition … for several different divisions of the Walt Disney Co.,” Disney/Pixar president Ed Catmull said. “We have a somewhat unfulfilled demand,” he said. “We wanted to do various things with ‘Toy Story’ to keep the characters alive. People like to see them somewhat regularly.” He pointed to Pixar chief creative officer John Lasseter, who would like to do more with the “Cars” characters.

Toyota sees $8.6 billion annual loss

Toyota Motor Corp, the world’s biggest automaker, forecast a much bigger-than-expected $8.6 billion annual loss and said it would sell about 1 million fewer vehicles this year, leaving it desperately trying to cut costs in the grip of a severe market downturn. The global crisis that has battered demand for cars and pushed U.S. rival Chrysler into bankruptcy has hit Toyota hard, reversing its rapid expansion into overcapacity almost overnight. Dozens of its factories stand half idle. – from Reuters
