Baseball Roundup: Lots of dudes cut, some trades

jenkins

Lots of aging veterans got the ax in the past 24 hours. Here’s a rundown:

Things got going big with the release of Gary Sheffield by the Tigers.

The Phillies released OF Geoff Jenkins. The Reds are interested in Jenks, who can’t hit lefties worth a damn, and righties are a tough call after watching him last year.

The Rangers let go of OF/1B Frank Catalanotto. Look for him to catch on as a pinch hitter, back up OF somewhere – he can still hit as long as he’s healthy. The Rangers will keep Andruw Jones instead.

The Marlins get former pitching stud Hayden Penn for Robert Andino. Penn was once a hot prospect, but has looked like junk the last couple of years. Perhaps a trip to the NL and big Marlins stadium will do the trick.

KC cut veteran reliever Joel Peralta, and sent 1B Russ Gload to the Marlins.

The Blue Jays cut former #1 pick Matt Bush, who they had acquired in the off season from San Diego. Bush has had some issues involving alcohol in the past, and the Jays said he ran afoul of the “zero tolerance” terms of his agreement.

The Brewers let go of 3B Mike Lamb in favor of rookie Casey McGehee.

The Marlins cut 3B Dallas McPherson when they could not trade him. McPherson hit 42 HR in the minors last season (to go with a buttload of strikeouts). Someone will give him a try – word is the Yankees are interested, but Houston might be a good fit.

The Nationals said bye bye to Wily Mo Pena. Pena never lived up to his great promise.

Baseball Buzz: Markakis, Hamels, Jones, Varitek

hamels
The Orioles are closing in on an extension Nick Markakis. Markakis will get a six-year deal for $60+ million. Assuming things go through, it’s a great move by the O’s.

In the next extension, the Phillies have inked ace pitcher Cole Hamels to a three-year, $20.5 million contract. Although the deal doesn’t buy out any of Hamels abry years, it’s a good move for a player who really blossomed last season. Hamels was the MVP of last year’s World Series.

Scott Boros said eight teams have inquired about recently released Andruw Jones. If Jones can lay off the buffet table, he has a chance to rebound. Still, for years Jones coasted on his ability, and unless he dedicates himself to the game, he’ll just disappoint

Jason Varitek says he wants to come back to Boston – and met with the Red Sox owner yesterday. Too bad his asshole agent advised him to reject arbitration earlier – it’ll likely cost Varitek $4-5 million. The key now is for Varitek to return without looking like an idiot.

Baseball Buzz: Jones cut, Cora to Mets, Colon to ChiSox

The Dodgers will release Andruw Jones on Jan. 15 as part of their deal to lower the salary hit this season. This was one of the worst signings of the last couple of years – $36+ million down the drain. Amazing how fast Jones’ skills have deteriorated.

The Mets have signed utility infielder Joey Cora to a one year deal. Nice guy to have around, but if he plays a lot, you know you’re in trouble.

Bartolo Colon is returning the White Sox on a one year deal. The big man pitched only 39 innings last season, but will compete for the fifth spot in the rotation for the Sox. Colon was a horse before his arm went bad.

Baseball Buzz: signings up the wazoo!

The Cubs agreed to terms with Milton Bradley on a three-year deal, acquiring the left-handed bat they lacked last year. Bradley is a quality hitter, but he has struggled to stay on the field due to injuries. He is best suited to DH, but for the Cubbies he’ll play RF.

Twins owner Carl Pohlad, a billionaire who purchased the Twins in 1984, died Monday. He was 93 years old. Pohlad was routinely criticized for underfunding the Twins.

The Tampa Bay Rays filled their need for a DH slot, agreeing to a two-year, $16-million contract with free-agent Pat Burrell. Good move at a good price.

Royce Ring became the third left-hander in the St. Louis Cardinals’ bullpen, agreeing to a one-year contract.

The Braves could sign former star Andruw Jones to a contract if he becomes a free agent this month. Jones has fallen off the map as a player, but perhaps a return to his original team will rejuvenate him.

Baseball Buzz: Lowe rejects Mets, Jones out in LA, joy back in SD

Derek Lowe has rejected the Mets 3-year $36 million offer. Lowe reportedly wants $16 million a year. Hah! So do I!

The Dodgers have restructured Andruw Jones contract so it won’t be so much of a financial hit to move him – either via trade or a straight release. A return date to Atlanta might be in order.

Trevor Hoffman, baseball’s all-time save leader, may have hope in San Diego after all. With the impending sale of the team, a reconciliation may be possible.

Baseball buzz: Jones out in LA, White Sox interested in Brian Roberts, Moorad aims for Pads ownership

Jeff Moorad resigned as chief executive officer of the Arizona Diamondbacks to pursue ownership of the San Diego Padres.

The Chicago White Sox – not Cubs – are reportedly talking to the Orioles about 2B Brian Roberts. The Orioles would get starting pitcher Gavin Floyd. The Cubs have coveted Roberts for several seasons, but could never match up with the Orioles for the all-star.

The Dodgers have reworked Andruw Jones’ contract so that Los Angeles can part ways with the OF after his terrible 2008 season. There is almost no way he plays 2009 in LA.

Baseball Buzz: Dodgers stoke the hot stove

The Dodgers are starting to make the off season a bit more interesting. Here’s the rundown on LA dealings:

One source says the Dodgers have contacted power hitting OF Adam Dunn. Dunn has hit 40 HR for four years running and would provide much needed power. If the Dodgers sign Dunn, Manny is history.

Another outlet reports that the Dodgers have also talked with OF Bobby Abreu.

There was also early speculation about Andruw Jones heading to the Mets – although Mets official deny the report. The Mets wouldn’t take Jones unless the Dodgers took the equally overpaid Luis Castillo.
