In one of those ‘heartwarming stories of the week’ – Florida State safety Myron Rolle – expected to be drafted in the 2nd round of the NFL draft this April, has elected to bypass playing this year to attend Oxford. Kudos to Myron.
Florida State safety Myron Rolle has decided to forgo the NFL Draft and stay in school another year. The school just happens to be Oxford University. (That’s a bit of an upgrade, I think.) As you no doubt recall, Rolle received a coveted Rhodes Scholarship back in November, but is also projected as a mid-second round draft pick. Yesterday, he announced that he will put the NFL on hold to go for a one-year master’s degree in medical anthropology at the prestigious and snooty English school. Of course, he graduated high school early, finished his FSU bachelor’s in 2.5 years (he’s already working on another master’s there) and has junior eligibility, so technically, he’s still coming out early and would enter the 2010 draft with his regular class. – From Deadspin
Just wanted to take this opportunity to say thanks to Florida State safety Myron Rolle. Thanks for giving us something to feel good about. Thanks for making us see that student-athlete isn’t the biggest oxymoron since congressional action. Thanks for showing us that college football players do more in their spare time than get arrested. When Rolle earned a Rhodes Scholarship over the weekend, it was perhaps the most uplifting college football story of the season. What a godsend this kid has been to Florida State. In a tumultuous season scarred by player suspensions, fraternity fights and academic scandal, Rolle’s remarkable accomplishment on one magical, magnificient fall Saturday made everything seem right again. – From Orlando Sentinel
