Baseball Buzz: Brad Pitt as Billy Beane, signings, rumors

derek-jeterThe Yankees are dreading 2010, when Derek Jeter’s contract runs out. Right now (despite the ridiculous gold gloves he has won), he’s one of the worst shortstops in the game. He field fine – he just has brutally limited range – and it’s only going to get worse. Come 2011, when he’s 37, there’s no way the Yankees want him at SS. He can’t move to 3B (A-Rod is there) or 1B (Mark Teixiera is set). 2B is filled by Robinson Cano, who had a bad year last year, but is signed through 2012. There’s a chance Cano continues to regress, and Jeter could move to 2B. Or they could move him to CF (no way he goes to a corner OF spot – his offense would be dreadful for those positions). Best bet would be for him to become a super sub guy – playing every position he can – getting 100-120 starts if there’s any extended injuries.

The Dodgers got a steal signing Randy Wolf to a one year deal worth around $5 million, plus $3 million in incentives. Braden Looper is still out there, and despite denials, the Brewers may come into the hunt if his price is only $4-5 million for one or two years. Baltimore has interest, but Looper prefers to stay in the NL.

The D-Backs added veteran reliever Tom Gordon to a one year deal. At 41 and coming off injury, this is strictly a shot in the dark, but if he’s healthy, he can help.

Brad Pitt as Billy Beane? That’s the rumors. Pitt would play Beane in a Moneyball movie. Steven Soderbergh would direct.

The Rangers added Jason Jennings to a minor league deal. Jennings has struggled with injuries the past few years. He’s strictly a reclamation project.
