Wolverine rules box office

X-Men Origins: Wolverine ruled at the box office this weekend, netting $87 million – about what was expected considering the weak reviews and mediocre word-of-mouth. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past underperformed a bit at just over $15 million – not terrible, but not the $20+ that similar-Matthew McConaughey girl films had done in the past (Fool’s Gold, How to lose a Guy in 10 Days). Obsessed fell off almost 60%, but still took in a solid $12 million for third place. 17 Again, Monsters vs Aliens, The Soloist, Earth, Fighting, Hannah Montana and State of Play rounded out the top 10.
The only other new release, Battle for Terra, a 3-D animated film, bombed big time, not even making the top 10 and netting only around $1 million. Monsters vs Aliens should make $200 million when all is said and none.
Wolverine will do okay, but this will suffer from lack of repeat viewing. The film also introduced a bunch of other mutants, which offer options for future films.
Next week will mark the debut of Star Trek, which will be the first blockbuster of the year.
Here is this week’s top 10.
