New in theaters this week: Transformers, My Sister’s Keeper,

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is out this weekend (actually started on Wed.). This is a true behemoth. Nothing will come close to this sucker. We could see as high has $160-170 for the five-day opening span, breaking the record held by Spiderman 3. It should make around $90 million for the actual weekend. The only other film in major release is the Cameron Diaz weepfest, My Sister’s Keeper, and adaptation of Jodi Picoult’s novel, with Abigail Breslin. It counterprograms the Autobots and Decepticons mayhem with a girl focused story about family, cancer, love, blah, blah. You get it. Look for around $10 million. The Hangover and The Proposal – last week’s leaders – should both come in around $20 million, while Pixar’s Up should hold on strong and get around $15 million (and top the $250 million mark). Year One will max out around $10 million (before fading into oblivion).
New this week:
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
The reviews are not pretty for this film. It’s louder, dumber, bigger, etc. We think Michael Bay is parodying himself. Still, it will be indestructible this weekend. The key will be repeat business. Will enough 12 year old boys go a second time to make it a true smash?
My Sister’s Keeper
I can see my wife crying now. Jodi Picoult’s novel is aimed squarely at the female crowd. Watch the trailer – if you groan – avoid it. If the tear starts forming, it’s for you.
