Kris Allen wins American Idol in stunning upset

Kris Allen upset favored Adam Lambert to win this year’s American Idol contest.

Allen was considered a longshot several weeks ago as well as coming into tonight’s contest. Allen overcame the more flamboyant Adam Lambert, who was championed by nasty-brit judge Simon Cowell. Allen was caught aback at his victory, and one of the first things he said was “Adam deserves this.” Many had thought that Lambert was one of the best – if not the best – performer ever on the show. And he certainly put a needed jolt into a show that has become a champion of mediocre/dull performers (Taylor Hicks for example). Don’t feel bad for Lambert – the dude has chops and will come out just fine.

Allen’s win might be attributed to his brave take on Kanye West’s ‘Heartless’ last week, which wowed judges and fans alike. He doesn’t have Lambert’s flash, but he has talent and is likable. It will all come down to the songs he’s able to record. In the end, Allen may have benefited most from Lambert’s edgy glam and goth look – which may have been a bit too much for the casual music fans who felt safer and more comfortable with the church-going southern kid.

The finale this year featured appearances by Queen, Rod Stewart, Cyndi Lauper and Kiss (who jammed with Lambert who seemed right at home in the wacky Kiss costumes and makeup).
