John Calipari leaving Memphis for Kentucky

After over a day of deliberation, John Calipari is headed to Kentucky. The coach sent a text message to ESPN.com’s Andy Katz on Tuesday evening saying, “I am accepting the UK job! Go Big Blue, coach Cal.” Kentucky officials told Katz that Calipari will receive an eight-year contract for $31.65 million plus incentives. Kentucky paid Memphis a $200,000 buyout. The exact details of the contract will be revealed at Wednesday’s news conference introducing the coach. Earlier Tuesday, Calipari told a confidante that he was also receiving a $2.5 million signing bonus. – From ESPN

Broncos to try and trade Pro Bowl QB Jay Cutler

The Denver Broncos stopped playing games with their unhappy quarterback. Jay Cutler is available in a trade. There is no shortage of teams interested in the 25-year-old rocket-armed quarterback whose unhappy offseason began with Mike Shanahan’s firing and has haunted new coach Josh McDaniels’ budding regime. Broncos owner Pat Bowlen released a statement saying both he and McDaniels had been unable to get Cutler to call them back over the last 10 days. Bowlen said he spoke with Cutler’s agent, Bus Cook, on Tuesday and came away convinced “that Jay no longer has any desire to play for the Denver Broncos.” Therefore, Bowlen said, “We will begin discussions with other teams in an effort to accommodate his request to be traded.” – From ESPN

Michael Vick agrees to return Falcons $6.5 million; release next?

michael_vick

Michael Vick has agreed to pay the Atlanta Falcons $6.5 million as part of his bankruptcy case, clearing the way for the team to release him before training camp, a person familiar with the settlement said Tuesday. The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the settlement was not being announced publicly, said the payment would go toward settling a bankruptcy claim by the team for salary paid to Vick while he was missing the last two seasons. Vick pleaded guilty to federal dogfighting charges and is in the final months of a nearly two-year sentence. He was once the NFL’s highest-paid player, signing a $130 million, 10-year deal with the Falcons in December 2004. – From SI

Giant Buramese pythons threaten south Florida

Juan Lopez reads meters with one eye and looks for snakes with the other. Officials say the pythons — which can grow to 20 feet long and eat large animals whole — are being ditched by pet owners in the Florida Everglades, threatening the region’s endangered species and its ecosystem. – From CNN

Massachusetts Girls Soccer Coach Resigns Over Hilarious, Possibly Insane Email

We have to admit, this his really freaking funny. Naming a soccer team for 6-7 year old girls ‘Green Death’ is as brilliant as it is tragic.

The whole thing is great, so read the whole article.

If George Patton had coached a girls soccer team, he probably would have run things this way; only without so many references to red meat. Meet Michael Kinahan, ex-coach of the Scituate, Mass. Green Death. Kinahan resigned as the coach of the 6- and 7-year-old girls team (not pictured) before the season even started, due to a hilarious and possibly insane email sent to parents as a way to introduce himself. Rather than try to explain it, let’s get right to the fun. This portion of the letter is aimed at the sideline behavior of the parents, and is possibly my favorite part:

It is imperative that we all fight the good fight, get involved now and resist the urge to become sweat-xedo-wearing yuppies who sit on the sidelines in their LL Bean chairs sipping mocha-latte-half-caf-chinos while discussing reality TV and home decorating with other feeble-minded folks. I want to hear cheering, I want to hear encouragement, I want to get the team pumped up at each and every game and know they are playing for something.

Sam Raimi’s ‘Drag Me to Hell’ gets first look poster

Hell’s bells! Even though Sam Raimi has kept one foot in the horror genre for the last few years, producing films like 30 Days of Night and The Grudge, it’s been far too long since we’ve seen him at the helm of a good ol’ spookshow. Blame Spider-man for that. Nevertheless, Raimi is back with a new picture, Drag Me to Hell, and we’ve got your exclusive first look at the one-sheet! It meant sacrificing any first born I might have, but it was worth it. Alison Lohman, the screaming beauty you see below, stars as Christine Brown, a bank employee who royally pisses off an elderly woman. The old hag puts a curse on Christine and now the poor girl has to shake her newly acquired bad mojo or face eternal damnation. To help out, she calls on boyfriend Justin Long and “seer” Dileep Rao. If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, visit DragMetoHell.net. – from ShockTillYouDrop.com

Ford says ‘no thanks’ to bailout money

Ford is the only major U.S. carmaker that is getting by without U.S. taxpayer money. GM and Chrysler, on the other hand, have been told the Obama administration they will receive operating funds for several weeks in return for undergoing significant restructuring. Mark Fields, executive vice president of Ford, spoke to CNN’s Kiran Chetry Tuesday on “American Morning” about the company’s plans and whether it will be able to continue without financial aid from the government. – From CNN

94% of all email is spam

In Daniel Suarez’s novel, Daemon, a program-like process is created by a recently deceased computer genius. The program – called the Daemon – proceeds to set up a new world order via technology. And in one of the best bits, orchestrates a the mass slaughter of almost 7,000 spammers around the world. It was brutal, but I’ll tell you, it was one of those things you wished could really happen.

spam

Spam, that annoying but ignorable scourge of the Web, has finally recovered from the jolt it received last November, when Internet backbone providers cut off McColo Corp., a California Web-hosting service that spammers were using to coordinate e-mail attacks. The average seven-day spam volume during the latter half of March is now at roughly the same levels as October of last year—around 94 percent of all e-mail—according to anti-spam company Postini, a division of Google. At first, the McColo takedown cut global spam traffic by about 70 percent, according to Postini, which provides e-mail security for more than 50,000 businesses and 15 million business users. “By far, it was the most dramatic event we have ever seen,” said Adam Swidler, product marketing manager for Postini Services. But this year, average spam volumes have increased about 1.2 percent each day. And there is evidence that spammers are now building more decentralized, peer-to-peer spamming botnets that no longer rely on the visible and vulnerable control nodes that they were using at McColo to guide their spam e-mail campaigns. – From NY Times

Man charged with drunk driving on bar stool

A 28-year-old man has been charged with drunken driving after crashing his motorized bar stool, Ohio authorities said. Police in Newark, 30 miles east of Columbus, say when they responded to a report of a crash with injuries on March 4, they found a man who had wrecked a bar stool powered by a deconstructed lawn mower. Police released the 911 tapes, revealing the calm exchange between the driver’s friend and the dispatcher. – From MSNBC

Tigers cut Gary Sheffield

This had disaster of a move the moment Sheffield arrived in Detroit. An aging slugger with injury issues isn’t a good person to give a 2-year $28 million extension to. But it happened, and the Tigers are wisely seeing it’s better to cut the cord now and move on.

Sheffield is 40 and a liability in the field, so the only place he really works is as a DH – or maybe 1B if he’s willing to play there. Some club will take a flyer on him at some point, but he really looks washed up. Perhaps the sting of the release will motivate Sheffield to one last grand comeback, but it’s all a matter of someone giving him a chance.

Gary Sheffield’s next home run will be his 500th in the major leagues. The question is: What uniform will he be wearing when he hits it? The Detroit Tigers released the nine-time All-Star on Tuesday, leaving him without a team as he closes in on becoming the 25th player to reach the milestone. The slugger’s stay in Detroit was a disappointing one. The team was hopeful Sheffield would be a powerful presence at the plate in the final season of the $28 million, two-year contract extension it gave him after acquiring him from the Yankees for prospects. But Sheffield failed to deliver in large part because he often was injured. – From ESPN

Biggest losers of auto bailout: the workers

workers

Does anyone still remember “Roger and Me?” Michael Moore’s 1989 film chronicled the filmmaker’s attempts to interview GM Chairman Roger Smith, whose efforts to streamline and downsize had shattered GM’s hometown of Flint, Mich. Back then, shutting down plants, cutting benefits, and throwing workers on the proverbial street was depicted as the epitome of corporate heartlessness and greed. Now it is the policy of the Obama administration. Twenty years after “Roger and Me,” we are all heartless capitalists. We want efficiency, viability, and fast results, and we’re not going to fritter away tens of billions of taxpayers dollars waiting for them. We’ve agreed that keeping dying companies on life support isn’t the solution. But when it comes to creating a plan for what happens next to the workers displaced in the process, we are every bit as lacking in ideas as Roger Smith ever was. – From MSNBC

Russia backs return to Gold Standard to solve financial crisis

Arkady Dvorkevich, the Kremlin’s chief economic adviser, said Russia would favour the inclusion of gold bullion in the basket-weighting of a new world currency based on Special Drawing Rights issued by the International Monetary Fund. Chinese and Russian leaders both plan to open debate on an SDR-based reserve currency as an alternative to the US dollar at the G20 summit in London this week, although the world may not yet be ready for such a radical proposal. Mr Dvorkevich said it was “logical” that the new currency should include the rouble and the yuan, adding that “we could also think about more effective use of gold in this system”. The Gold Standard was the anchor of world finance in the 19th Century but began breaking down during the First World War as governments engaged in unprecedented spending. It collapsed in the 1930s when the British Empire, the US, and France all abandoned their parities. It was revived as part of fixed dollar system until US inflation caused by the Vietnam War and “Great Society” social spending forced President Richard Nixon to close the gold window in 1971. – From Telegraph UK

Encarta dies a quiet death

encarta

Ah, everyone has had the experience – a new PC and buttloads of worthless software included. Discs and discs of CDs – most of them crap. But included in that ream of junk was Microsoft’s Encarta – an encyclopedia right on my own computer. The idea was kind of cool. At least it felt kind of cool. But like all CDs, it suffered from the same thing newspapers suffer from nowadays – an inability to stay up with the times.

20 years ago the concept was fine – we got our news and information from printed material. A set of encyclopedias was a big purchase for a family. They would be used for years to come by kids doing research for school projects. A CD of such material only seemed to be a logical extension – compact and up-to-date (at least for that year).

But like so many newspapers, Encarta failed to realize that the Internet was revolutionizing how people digested news and information. No site understood it better than Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia where updates are only a moment away. People discovered very quickly that they could find information on subjects from a variety of sources instantly. You were no longer stuck with Britannica’s or Encarta’s version of the world. And you certainly weren’t stuck with information that was out of date by months – or – gasp – even years.

And so millions of Microsoft Encarta software discs are but memories – just like Encarta itself.

Sony cuts PS2 to under $100

ps2

The PS2 is still a wildly popular game, despite being over nine years on the market and the introduction of the PS3 – a true testament to its quality.

Sony is cutting the price of its PlayStation 2 console by almost 25 percent in both Europe and North America, the company said Tuesday. The console, which has just begun its tenth year on retail shelves, will cost €100 (US$133) and US$100 from Wednesday. It previously cost €130 and US$130. Sony has sold more than 136 million of the consoles since it first launched on March 4, 2000, in Japan. It went on sale in Europe and North America in November of the same year. Despite the launch of the more advanced PlayStation 3 console, the older model has remained equally popular in part due to the large catalog of games and low price. New software for the console continues to be published, and the price cut seems to ensure that its popularity will continue. – From PC World
